Yikes. Really really worn out suspension bushings? Worn out K-frame rubber isolator mounts? I hope it isn't too serious or expensive.

Hello everybody, its been a while. Something broke on my Volare's front end on the way home from work. For a few months now, it would make a strange noise on the front end, like something hitting the wheel. But not all the time. It got worse today, grinding, smell of burning rubber, so it was towed to a shop. I have known this mechanic for years. So, I guess we'll see. I'll post here when I know more. |

Not too expensive, price of a Poly late B-body Isokit and and afternoon pulling bolts and sliding new ones in place...Forget what the cost of the bushing kit from Spring n' Things or Espo... but not bad... Quote: Really really worn out suspension bushings?
This is one that will hurt... UCA's aren't a big deal similar to the B-body with captured pivot bars... the LCA isn't too bad... the T-bar Bushings that are a bit more involved and require some drilling, a welder, and a press... bushings are reasonable from Mr. Spiva at Polybushings and are very good quality... FYI. I will say, once you replace all those shoddy bushings the car will be very stable and really nice to drive. |

Years ago, I installed cast iron k-member isolators. That was over twenty years ago, I bought this car in August of 1993.  Just a few years ago, I hit a median and "rode" it for several feet. This dented the Chrysler cop car wheel, so I installed the spare and drove home. The alignment seemed okay, but I wonder if that mishap had anything to do with today's breakdown, or not? I'll find out something tomorrow. |

Well the only sources for a burning rubber small accompanied by grinding in the front end are tires and belts. If you have hit and ridden a median bad enough to bend a steel wheel and now hear a noise like something is hitting the tire then I would be suspicious of something in the front end. Fingers crossed for you. |

Yeah, it was the upper control arm hitting the tire and rim. I'll find out later. Thanks for the replies and well wishes!

When the upper ball joint fails...I hope a UBJ is all it is. Of course, if one has failed to the point the tire is rubbing, it is a safe bet that the rest of the front end isn't far behind. |

x2 with Reed's sentiments... One of the many reasons I overhauled the my '78 Aspens front end... and the passenger side balljoint hadn't been seated correctly or properly torqued and had some other issues... now that it is overhauled, that is the least of my worries now. |

Wes- if you decide to tackle this project on your own, I have both sizes of the special Mopar upper ball joint socket. I would be happy to loan them to you if you need them. They fit conveniently in a small size flat rate shipping box. |

Thanks Reed. Due to my hectic scheduke I had the shop fix it for me. I've known this mechanic for years. It was the ball joint that came apart, but two tie rods were not farr behind. Also, the idler arm was badly worn. They aligned the front end, so I'll pick her up today after work. |

Okay, got her back, and feels much better going down the road. My mechanic brought up the fact that smoke is coming out the tailpipe and the valve cover, and that oil is coming out the dipstick. he thinks number one piston is cracked or has a hole in it. So, looks like a motor swap is in order. That's for another thread though. |
