Okay, the front end is in much better shape. Now, about that smoke from the exhaust...
And the oil coming out the dipstick...
I have a remachined slant on an engine stand. Pistons and crank are in, and the cam is installed.
I'm starting to round up the rest of the components that have been scattered about my garage.
Hopefully the original slant will last for a little while longer. The plan is to have the rebuilt slant ready to drop in by spring break, which is next month.
I'm sure I'll have some questions, so stay tuned.

Ok, so crank and pistons are installed in the block, as is the camshaft.
Should the timing chain and sprockets be next?
This is my first time on a slant six.

Yup. Timing set, then oil pump. You absolutely must install the oil pump with the engine out on an f body.

Thanks Reed.
I believe you about the oil pump.
Okay, I'm not there yet, but should I purchase a harmonic balancer, or rob one from a used slant?
In addition to the slant I have on an engine stand, I have two used slants in my garage.

I say get a new one. I put one of these on my 76 D100 when the outer ring on the damper completely separated form the inner ring. I like this piece. Nice, heavy, three grooves for accessory upgrades in the future:

Thanks Reed.
Is there a place besides ecay where I can order one?
Also, my Volare is a '78, but the rebuilt slant will be a '72 block.

remember when you buy a NOS damper that rubber ring can be 30+ years old,,,,,

You can also have your existing damper rebuilt,

check out Damper Dudes

http://www.damperdudes.net/

there is also Damper Dr's I believe

I don't know the interchange but the timing mark relationship of the damper and front cover moved around over the years,
match the damper and timing chain cover for the year(s) engine, or plan to check and re mark as necessary TDC as part of the engine build plan.

Timing tab is the same 1974-1978-ish damper will be different forged crank/cast crank in spokes and weight but both fit and work fine.

The 1978 engine in my son's Aspen had the 1979+ timing tab with the mag probe tube and 0-30 BTDC tab... when I pulled the engine.

FYI.

Okay, so digging around in my garage last night I located the timing chain and sprockets.
I also found the original harmonic balancer from my Volare's slant six that I replaced several years ago with the harmonic balancer from the '72 slant six that I'm putting back together.
So, I'm thinking that I will ship this one to have it rebuilt.

Okay, the cam is in, crank, pistons as well.
Timing chain and sprockets; its been a while since I disassembled this engine.
I know to line up the marks on the sprockets, anything else?
I have a couple of used slants that I could take apart if I need to.

Preferrable to degree it than connect the dots.

Um, well, I don't have one of those degree wheels.
This is a stock engine, nothing fancy.
So, does using a degree wheel make the timing more precise?

It doesn't make it more precise, but it does help detemine if the cam is indexed correctly ... and you can '
also use it with a set of offset bushings to advance the cam a bit to make better lowend torque.. (conversely
if the cam is retarded, it will make better top end power... but will be a slug at low rpms...)

The concern is that the slant timing sets have been produced by a wide range of manufacturers, so the "dot"
may not be in the right position to be "straight up" or slightly advanced....
