i believe its a 235 or a 240 motor. it's going in a late 70's dodge truck. i'm having the darnedest luck finding the carb. only thing i've found was a edelbrock 500cfm

You could check ebay, they show up once in a while. Not long ago someone listed restrictors for a Carter AFB which would make a small cfm carb. 500 is not that much larger.

I think the closest carb you are looking for is a Holley 4360. It is a spreadbore four barrel carb, but the secondaries are barely bigger than the primaries. It is rated at 450 CFM and was originally intended as an economy carb in the 70s and 80s. The 4360 came out in a number of models tailored to various GM, Ford, and Chrysler products. Unless you are willing to run a manual choke, you want to get one that has an electric choke, which is somewhat hard to find.

Last year I was researching 4360s and wound up buying a bunch of them. Most of them ended up being parts carbs or cores, but I have a few I was intending to rebuild and run. Most people say they can't be tuned but they share jets with the Weber carbs.

thank you I don't want to put you out there too much trouble besides I'm not a real big fan of Holley carburetors I had a ultra rare Carter 400 CFM carburetor but my engine builder lost it during the rebuild on my motor

Holley 390 cfm or 8007 list it looks like this pricey new, but probably easy to find a second hand unit. It's what I'm running on my hopped up slant six bored out to about 230 ci.

I would select vacuum secondary operation of whichever carb you select as it opens secondaries based on engine's demand not throttle position.

Is engine a flat head, and what kind of rpm is this engine turning to require 400 cfm?

You could always go double 2bbls with an offy manifold.....just saying. I had my Webers synchronized and it sounded just like a thermoquad kicking in when I hit the pedal to the floor..also better fuel distribution with two distribution points vs one.

If you are interested, I have a Holley 390 carb that I will not be using. Fair warning, it has no choke function, it's a race carb. I never hooked it up, but it came from a highly reliable source. I decided I was likely to use my car in cooler weather, so the non-choke business is the reason it's for sale. PM me if interested.
