Hey Guys, Rebuilding my first slant and I've been pouring over everything I can find on the subject. I ran across something that has me a little curious though. According to the "Slant Six Racing manual" pdf, all the scenarios specify to not let the engine go above 180 degrees during the break-in period. Now I'm not planning on racing this engine, but the stock thermostat is 180-195(summer/winter) degrees. Do I need to be worried about this? I know I can get a 160 degree thermostat but I don't see this mentioned in any other discussions on breaking one in. |

That "Slant-6 Racing Manual" is full of fairytales (errors -- lots of them, big and small). Best close it and leave it closed except for telling stories around a campfire. There is no factual basis to this idea that the engine shouldn't go over 180° during break-in. There is also usually no basis for switching thermostat temperatures for summer/winter, and there is almost never a valid reason to use a too-cold (160°) thermostat Read this (and all four subsequent chapters). |

I have never worried about break in temp. It is always hot because you are scraping freshly roughened/machined metal surfaces together. No problems here... Lou |

x3 I've used 180 and 195 degree T-stats on 10-11:1 SCR motors and no problems... make sure to top up the overflow tank after it pukes then draws the coolant back into the radiator. |

I saw that same "keep it under 180 degrees during brake-in" bit of info in the above said book... To early here for camp fires. |

Engine heats up pretty good during breakin, but stays within acceptable range, i.e. it doesn't boil over or anything. You can definitely feel the extra heat though...totally normal. brian |
