I know the pictures aren't that clear--can't get any closer because of the fence. The car behind it is a Volvo.

Here are some details you can't see in the photo. There's a pair of horizontal chrome strips near the base of the C pillar. The tail lights are rectangular, with a silver strip filling almost all the space in between them. The headlights are round with squared bezels, similar to a '66 Dart. There's a very slight body crease curving up from behind the door toward the rear quarter. You can see the pinch at the top of the rear quarter. Otherwise there's not a lot of detail in the body panels.

Looks like a Rambler, I would guess about a 66-68. My mom drove a (I think) 660 American 4 dr when I was 4 or 5 yr old.

Yep, that's a '66 or '67 Rambler American. It's not a '68 (no sidemarker lights or reflectors) and it's not a '65 (different front and rear details).

What they said.
Get it, Rich! And it's a 2-door hardtop! Turbo the (probable) six-banger, and make a spirited little street driver out of it.

Better than turbo: drop a late Jeep 4.0 EFI motor in it.

Sandy, it's probably an old 232, not the later 258, but Dan's idea ain't bad either.

Look closely, two exhaust pipes protruding beneath rear bumper. And I agree with Dan, 66-67 AMC Rambler American.

In 66 top of American line called Rambler Rogue could be had with an optional 290ci V8, 1967 American optional V8 was 343 ci displacement, and sported new rectangular tailamps shorter and taller than 1966. I think car pictured is a 1967, it's been a bazillion years since I last saw one of these buggies in the flesh.

There is a guy around these parts that drives an American during summer. In traffic, a quick side glance at roof and C pillar line invokes a Valiant. It has fooled me more than once.

One of my dad's favorite cars he owned. He still talks about it. Had a tiny V8 and could burn the rear hides off if desired, but got decent gas mileage. no frills, but a solid car.

A long ago friend of mine of mine bought a '66 American or Rambler in the late 70's, for an extended North American tour. I recall doing a tune up and going over some things for him. His had the 199 ci. I think some had the 232. No more re-torqueing cylinder head bolts every oil change, like the 196 flathead conversion. The auto trans was slipping a bit when he left. ( Borg-Warner?). He ran it for two years all over the West, Canada and Alaska. He abandoned it deep in remote Mexico when the poor trans finally gave out.

the '64 rambler, to me, looks like a cross between a 63 dart and a '64 ford falcon. Yes, these cars at first glance can fool you, because they resemble others in many aspects.

My dad had a 64 American with 196cid engine in late 70`s. He still is remembering how smooth running engine that was :) "It ran so much smoother than these slants" 8)

They came in both flat head and OHV versions of basically the same block. They suffered from a poorly designed cooling system that ate head gaskets in the OHV version, but could have easily been remedied with a small coolant passage under the thermostat. It was the last and finest of the Nash designed engines.
