I would like to hear other's experiences, opinions and ideas on /6 exhaust.

I have a mildly built /6 Duster (among other things), it currently has sort of a cobbled up dual exhaust system with some fairly vintage Clifford headers, 2" headpipes and 1-3/4" tailpipes. I've been running the same basic exhaust system since the car's "super six" days, all of the pipes and headers came from a junked Valiant in which someone had made an attempt to hop up the six. Everything was practically new when I salvaged it, but clearly the pipes were kind of half-assed done.

When I warmed up the /6 beyond 2bbl form, I went to straight through "torque-tube" type mufflers. Sounded awesome at idle, but anything beyond idle sounded like tee-total $#!+. A crossover tube helped, but I ended up sticking some teeny JC Whitney glasspacks at the very aft end of the pipes under the bumper with some slightly swaged "trumpets". Since doing that, it has looked and sounded cool, but I know it's really not ideal from a performance standpoint. I usually run open headers at the track, but it really makes little difference in my time, so go figure.

My current plan is to have some better pipes bent. I'm thinking two into one into two. I want to put a Y-pipe just aft of the dual header outlets into a big 2-1/2 or 3" pipe into a single turbo muffler, then two 2" tailpipes. I'm thinking 6 into 1 helps keep the exhaust flow moving on a six cylinder with more pressure pulses (less "dead air") than (3 into 1)X2. Am I right? It certainly sounds better. What kind of trick exhaust systems do some of you run?

Dennis,

I just had a 2X2.25" into single 3" system run on my '64 Dart. Used a Flowmaster Y-pipe starting right at the trans Xmember, a 3-chamber Flowmaster muffler and 3" out the back. The only reason I see for duals on a Slant Six is looks, which is fine, but not for me. I have the Clifford Street Rod headers.

The guys who did my exh system were by far the best custom exh place I've been to (R&J Custom Exh in Apex, NC). Even with the 3" over the axle and out the back it has never rubbed, and they got it at about the stock exhaust hang height. The FM muffler is a bit loud, but not too bad, and has a very throaty sound at low RPM and sounds mean at high RPM. The Dynomax Super Turbo would be quieter, and I may end up swapping one of those in later.

This system, I believe makes a little more power above 3000 RPM than my previous system, which was 2X2" pipes running side-by-side back to two mini turbos (hanging side-by-side under the drivers rear floor) dumping in front of the axle. This new system is quieter too.

Cheers,

Lou

I bought my car with the intention of turning it into a "Kustom" not for performance. The guy I got it from had the same intention...

It's straight piped w/ 1 1/2" pipe, no muffler. It has that raspy, rat rod sound to it, especially when shifting from 1st to 2ed gear.

The car is lowered about 3" - the exhaust runs UNDER the rear end.

There is about a 2' x 5" hole in the floor under the rear seats; cut to allow the drive shaft ride up with out hitting - made a really nice funnel for getting exhaust fumes into the cab until I filled it.

- I know this probably dosn't help, just my 2 centavos...

Joe

Well i decided to go with header with 3" end straight into a thrush header muller. From there i put a turndown pipe on.

I decided not to go all the way back because I found people judge the car by the number of tailpipes. This way they will have to guess what I got.

Plus in Wisconsin if you have hobbyist plates you can do want you want basically. :D

Mopar 6to1 longtube headers, wraped. into a 3"in/out shorty cat. converter then a 3" in/out Dynomax 6x16 glasspack 5' of 3" pipe, one 90 mandrel bend and one 45, ending with a 5" disk only Supertrapp. The header wrap and the cat. are suppose to keep the exhast gasses hot and moving. Not as loud as my old 2@1/2" system with a 2chamber Flowmaster and tail pipe. Not as cool sounding as a dual system, but it's simply tuneable. Bruce Johnson
