Post subject:  Distributor cap
I have a problem with those contacts in distributor cap. They get very fast dirty, They get coated and it's causing misfire. I have Accell power coil, could it be the reason for that? Or is there somenthing else wrong? wires and sparks are new and best possible I can get here. This is electronic ignition.

I just use a screw driver to lightly clean the contacts once every month or two. I had a 383 and 400 do the same thing, along with my slant. Never had it cause misfire though. No clue what causes it, maybe ozone?

I clean mine with a wire wheel in my dremmel ever other month or so.

I have used some caps that have a little breather on them. Next to the wire coming from the coil, there is another little post on them with a rubber cap on the top that acts as a sort of relief. One of these caps may be better suited to your environment so it can breath and not cause any ailments to the contacts within.

Believe the vented caps are made by Borg Warner this is what I installed, still have the box so could provided part#. Dave

I'm on vacation now and i have not been at net for a long time.

For to Dennis, coil polarity is not reversed.

And after reading that You guys are cleaning those contacts so often, I think that I have no problem. I'm using O2 sensor and with it it's very easy to see when you have misfire. My problem was those contacts. O2 sensor was showing all the time that mixture was lean, but after cleaning them the O2 sensor showed tha mixture was rich. Explanation for that is simple. When there was misfire, some of cylinders were not firing, there was very much oxygen in exhaust gases. when everything is working well, there is more fired oxygen. So the O2 sensor shows rich mixture.

Maybe I should write an other post about o2 sensor and what you find with it. But I tell right now that if you try to make mileage and make mixture too lean, it has same effect than misfire ( and all the time car is working like normal). I believe that the reason is those side cylinders (1 and 6) that get too lean and spark is not able to at fire them and fuel is going out raw. So if you want to be sure what is happening in your engine O2 sensor is very good and cheap option.

Joug, your English is fine, much better than our Finnish. Are you using a resistor type spark plug and is your car points or electronic ignition? And are the contacts just getting dirty or are they actually erroding away? I wonder if it could be a parts mis-match for the year/type igniton that you have. Or maybe an incorrect rotor. You're right about the end cylinders and also about lean misfire. The O2 reading will climb along with HC while the CO will go way down.

Now vacation is over :( and I have more time for the net.

This is electronic ignition. spark plugs are A/C Delco's R45 and I have no idea are they resistor type or not. And those contacts just get very dirty very easily , they are not erroding away (if I understand that right).

Is there really differences between rotors and caps? If so, it can be possible that part shop have sold me wrong parts.

And there is breather on the cap.
