Hi all, How many turns and how much thread depth of the pickup tube goes into the block? I'm installing a truck type tube into the block and pan. But it only turns maybe 3 or 4 turns before real hand tight. |

The FSM for my 83 D150 says to set the oil pick up so there is a slight interference with the bottom of the pan. So basically set the side oil pan gaskets in place then test fit the tube length one turn at a time till the strainer rests on the pan bottom when the gaskets touch the oil pan rails. Be sure to get the angle right. |

The threads are an interference fit, but look close to make sure there is not a burr, flat spot or wavey thread on the pick up or block threads, if so address that. I remember having to use a set of pipe wrench channel locks to turn the pick up to set the depth. |

Okay thanx.I remember having to use a set of pipe wrench channel locks to turn the pick up to set the depth. The pickup turned out fine. Had trouble with new truck type pickup could not get it started even. Did some minor thread damage on new pickup its at local machine shop get fixed...ughh Should I run the npt tap into the female threads perhaps. Not fun as engine was on lift and not on a stand.. At some point will get her buttoned up.. |

Would not hurt to run a pipe tap into the block, but have a plan to get any debris out,,, |

I don't think 3 or 4 turns is enough. The truck is a longer pick up and it all hangs on those 3 threads. They have been known to break and crack also. |

Yes 4 sure.Got it installed at 5 or 6 turns. With some teflon on threads. I need to get this engine on stand again. Once on stand can turn it upside down and make sure all is good which I feel it is and to prime the oil pump a bit too.. Its going into a 79 RX 7 this week with an A833 trans. I have done all the prep and cutting just gotta fab and install thd mounts. Engine will come back out for inspection paint etc. Then be reinstalled |
