Hey guys, I'm looking to swap my 170 for a 225. Was going to do some work on the 225 like decking and overboreing but then I found this: https://charlotte.craigslist.org/pts/d/ ... 47706.html Thoughts? This is for a '64 Valiant with a push-button trans. |

I'd have to take a look in person. If the tough stuff has already been done and done correctly, it looks like a good deal. |

I agree completely. What kills the deal is this: "Built 20+ years ago, never run." What is critical is how it has been stored for those intervening 20 years. If the bores were kept lightly oiled and the crank rotated periodically, then maybe it is fine. If was shoved in a corner of the shop with no head on it and left to rust then it is just a core motor. Best case scenario would be it would have to be disassembled and derusted and cleaned. Might as well just get your motor rebuilt.

Is it close to you? If so, I'd be tempted to go take a look. Peel the tape off the deck, pull the oil pan, take a long look at the bores, cam, and crank. See if it'll turn over by hand. If it's not in terrible shape, offer the guy $400 and see if he bites. If it is magically rust-free and you decide not to tear it down and reassemble, at a minimum you'll want an external pump to pressurize the oiling system before spinning it much. Anything that was added to the bearing surfaces during assembly is probably long gone. |

If you can spin it and the bores look good (no rust or only tiny dots of rust), it might be worth $400-600. Some good parts there. Lou |
