What's the best kind of hose (or tubing) to use in installing a mechanical water temp gauge? Would it be a good idea to plumb it right off of the sender's hole in the head, or are there better options?

A mechanical water temp guage will come with the tube and "sender" as part of the unit.
These usually have a sealed copper tube wiith something like freon inside, the heat expansion of the gas is what moves the guage needle.

Ooooo, me likes freon (yeah a guy just gave me 150 bucks worth of r12 for my truck, woohoo). So where would be a good place to put the sender? Think I should use the stock sender location, or can I get a little crafty here?

I had one in a dodge 318 and just used the sender opening. It worked fine until another mishap broke the tubing. Use caution and route it somewhere you won't be needing to move it later. I dont think it would hurt to put something around the tubing while you're at it.

You can use the plug that is on the passenger side of the block, towards the firewall. It is 3/8" instead of 1/8" so you might need adapters. That way you won't need as much tubign length to get to the other side of the engine.

Ooooo good idea. Be nice to have most of the tubing out of the way, too. I assume you can't just cut this tubing can you, given that it's got freon inside of it?

I was thinking of a wire cover maybe. it should have a spring around it. To shorten it, you have to coil it . Can't cut it - you are correct

Hey Pierre I can't find that plug on the block. I felt around all over for it but no such luck. Would it only be on newer blocks or are you just messing with my head?

Its on 3 of the 71 blocks I have. Err well 2 71 blocks the other came from a JY and am not sure what year it is but its on all 3. These are the blocks with 5 freeze plugs in the row. Once I finish reading these messages I'll go outside and take a picture.

Digital camera did not want to cooperate with me... Facing the passenger side of the block, looking down at the oil pump, you look at the oil pressure sending unit sticking out the oil pump, move about two inches to the left, then go forward untill you hit the block and it should be in that vincinity. All you will feel is a little metal slug with four sides on it. Take a flashlight with you it should be easy to spot other then the oil pressure sending unit theres nothing near by obstructing it
