Hey guys: I am running a large-bore early-style BBS on my '68 Valiant 225. This car has been off the road a long time and I spent the winter and spring getting it ready to go on the road again. I rebuilt that carb from a core I picked up from eBay. I gave it the standard 2 day soak and clean and a new kit, and it doesn't run right. Cold starts, warm starts and idling is fine, but when it transitions into the main circuit at about 1200 rpm, it starts running poorly...unevenly, random misfiring and pops in the exhaust, all indicative of a lean mixture. I chased points and timing until I realized it's related to throttle position regardless of load. After studying the BBS manual posted online, I *think* I might know what's behind this: There is a piece called the main vent tube, which has the main air bleed on the upper end. It lives in a passageway that is sealed with a rivet plug under the front of the bowl. I did not remove any of that and clean it. My question is, is that tube cloggable/removable/cleanable? I know about the Carter rivet tool, I'll get one if it's deemed likely that the main circuit is partially plugged. I've done a lot of Quadrajets and that's exactly what they act like when the main air bleed tube on one side is clogged. Just to clarify, it's NOT a flat spot...it responds and runs fine until about 1200 rpm, then breaks up. New tank, sock, pump and filter before anyone asks. Thanks guys. |

I'm not sure which plug you're talking about, but I've removed the one on top that's part of the ACC pump circuit to clean the ACC pump jet. Just used vice grips to remove it. Then when done, I put some Loctite on it and tapped it in with a hammer. |

I know what plug you are speaking about. I bought a BBS on eBay and decided to resurrect it for daily use. I did the same couple day soak, but I did remove all the plugs I could. That main large plug in the front leads to the hollow shaft you are speaking about. I recall reading that the part is NOT removable. So with the plugs out, I made sure to empty an entire can of carb cleaner into those passages and then blow them out with compressed air (gently). That passage area was pretty gummed up and had some metal mold growing in it. I would imagine if you get that cleaned out good you will see a vast improvement. I purchased a plug kit from Mike at Mikes Carburetor. Very comprehensive kit with multiples of each size. Just tap them on with a small hammer while holding the carb. No leaks for me after this procedure. No dead spots and all works well. Doug |

That blue line is top of main vent tube,a little small amount heat, pb blaster, let soak. Flat punch, light taps, should fall out bottom. |

That black line on left points to float pin retainer, make sure its holding the pin down. The main vent tube has 6 emulsion holes, make sure there clean. |

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm still chasing a running issue after cleaning the carb, which is in another thread. |
