Hey guys:

I'm still working through some tuning issues with the slant in my '68 barn-find Valiant with a 225, BBS carb and original distributor. I've got everything baselined...valve clearance in spec, base timing at 2 BTDC at idle, points at .017, carb gone through, new plugs...and it still runs poorly at above idle. I made a video clip of the exhaust which clearly reveals what's happening. I've got 25 years under my belt with these but have not dealt with points ign in a LONG time.

Take a listen if you would and you can probably tell me quickly what I have wrong. Thanks!

I tried to base line my 64 Dart when I brought it home and it would not run. It ran just like yours. I set my intake and exhaust valve lash cold to start. Set my points and then found true TDC which did match my mark on my crank. Sometimes those do slip. Anyway the 2 degrees was way too low for my car. It would backfire through the carb and do all kinds of weird stuff. I set it to 8 degrees and it would idle nicely. I let the engine get warm and reset the valve lash. Turned on the headlights and set the idle with carb. I ended up at 9 degrees btc for a great idle and performance. Try advancing your timing a bit to see if the problem corrects itself. Points gap should be .21 I believe.

Btw your 904 build series videos on YouTube inspired me to rebuild my trans top to bottom and it works flawlessly. Without that video I might have paid a pro to do it. So thank you.

Take a close look at the valve springs for a possible broken spring. Also put a timing light on it and watch and see if the timing is erratic while it is acting up.
