Post subject:  Valves? We don't got no stinking valves!

I'm finally to the point where I'm ready to build a cylinder head. This is for the engine going in my D100, and is as follows so far:
198 block bored to 87.5mm for 2.2 dished pistons
225 crank
198 rods
Oregon Cams 2106r regrind
A833OD with 3.55 rear gears
Dutra duals
Holley 350cfm 2 barrel carb
It's going to be a highway machine that pulls a small teardrop camper through the mountains, and the occasional boat. It'll also see occasional city driving.

I've been looking all over for some 1.70 and 1.44 valves, but I have come up with nothing so far. What options do I have? Should I just put in new, stock sized valves and do a little porting? Or will that be more work than it's worth? I read on an old FABO post that somebody was going to try a Ford 289 valve, and others have mentioned a BB Mopar exhaust being ground to 1.80 for the intake. That seems awfully close to the cylinder wall to me, and what about the exhaust?

I used 1.72/1.50 SBC valves . They are a bit taller and mandate the use of new pushrods.

I got the machine shop to give the head a bowl hog at the same time. ….and I used SBC valve springs and keepers.

Way cheap and the machine shop was relieved to be doing a Chev job...….

198 block
that must be the 198 motor that found its way from Indiana to George :D

for valves I am building a slant head using Ford 298 valves
Intake: SEV2564 1.780
Exhaust: SEV2563 1.45
the Ford valves have a .342 valve stem stock slant six is .375
so new guides will be required.

the Ford stem length is 4.870
slant six standard length is 4.774
the Ford valves are .096 longer,
I'll find out as the motor goes together what the
additional .096 will do, but I am thinking that the
slant six adjustable valve train will accommodate it.

I have also read of folks using stock mopar 318 valves, you get a bump in
valve size and retain the .375 valve stem diameter. The 318 valves are also longer than
the slant six valve.

Mike Jefferis ran Chevy valves with the OD cut down to the 1.7x and 1.4x diameter.
I believe that WV has a set of those that he could provide dimensions on to figure
out what Chevy valve was being used.
MJ said he liked the Chevy valves because they were cheap.

It is! Block, head, oil pump, and rods to be exact. I've stored the red engine block and head for a someday project.

Thanks! I looked at the catalog and saw the 1.77 intake and 1.44 exhaust valves, but no price listed. Look to be good pieces.

Is there enough metal in the head to do much of a bowl hog before it strikes water? My local shop mainly makes circle track Chevrolet engines, so I'm sure they have all the stuff to do that.

I'm the "pending sale." It's coming with some other stuff, and I'm waiting on a shipping quote from Charlie.

Thanks! I have yet to hear back from SI valves, but I like the idea DadTruck has about the Ford 289 valves. Since I need valve guides any way, stem size doesn't really matter.

Not much! Especially between the intake and exhaust ports. Ask me how I (And others) know! :D :D
I have photographic evidence of the mishap if needed!

Pics say a thousand words! My machinist guy is excited about working on something other than a V8. I'm kinda excited myself.

Mopar big block exhaust valves (Sealed Power #V1900) are 3/8" stem, 1.74" dia and are only 0.100" too tall.
I am using a set as intake valves on my slant head. I can easily shave off the extra length to keep everything even height-wise.

There are those Band Sawed Heads threads on the Engine FAQ page. Those might be helpful.
