So, the junkyard engine had a bad crankshaft bearing. The auto parts store says there are several options, how do I know which size I need?

Thanks again and again!

Crankshaft main bearing or connecting rod bearing??

Both come in standard, and oversized (where the crank gets machined to renew the surfaces, and a larger (thicker) main or connecting rod bearing is used to fill the space..

More importantly at this moment WHY do you believe the crank needs new bearings... I ask because usually tho not always, that condition suggests there is more extensive work needed...

Pictures may help at this point, to identify a course of action that is required...

One of nuts that held the bearing cap on came off, making it very loose, grinding off a side of the bearing. The nut was floating free in the oil pan.

The other bearings look ok.

What does the crankshaft bearing journal surface look like? If the cap looks that bad you may need to have the crank ground.

That is a connecting rod bearing. Most likely you will need a new/different con rod, or at least get that one resized and have new bolts put in it. Do not skimp on this or you will not have a long living motor. Reed is right you need to carefully check the crank rod journal too.

It looks like a later cast crankshaft bearing...
Is the oil spurt hole near the center of the bearing and is the bearing insert just under 1 inch wide?
