Is it feasible or needed to go to a heavier weight oil after filling the water jackets? https://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62779 |

Okay here goes the sob story.. I used to run 10w30 or 5w30 in the first 2 engine blocks that I used in the ruster car.. high 11 second car... no block filling... running coolant in block.. stockish bearing clearances. Now after having collapsed oil hose as well as other oiling (or percieived) oiling maladies i couldn't get the oil pressure to stay steady after engine got hot.. this is with Ruster engine build 3.0... which has a partial block fill. So tonite at test n tune I tried 20w50. Remember this build has block fill and looser than stock bearing clearances... so far so good. Is this a normal course of action for you block fillers or am I just crazy? Cheers and hope nothing breaks before making 38 laps at clay city. Greg |

I don't think the block filling has anything to do with it but wider bearing clearances would probably require a thicker oil to show the same oil pressure you used to have. |

With loose bearing tolerances, you would need heavier oil to maintain pressure or higher volume to overcome the 'leaks' from the extra clearances. |

If the heat load is higher due to the block fill, then you need an oil cooler. I do not think that hotter running per se will require heavier oil. All oils of the same type will break down in roughly the same temp range. Lou |

And am I thinking right that the external pump that you run should have plenty of volume even if the clearances are a little looser. I would have suspected 10/30 would have been Ok. Then again I may be totally wrong. |
