DusterIdiot's post reminded me to ask this (thanks bro :) ), but when is the "Brake System" light supposed to come on? The sender connection was disconnected and the lightbulb taken out of the socket when I tore into the dash, and I just want to make sure it works the way it should and that there wasn't a good reason it was removed.

The only brake light I have in my dash (71 duster, standard cluster) is right next to the oil light and is labeld "Brake". It comes on when the E-brake handle is pulled. There is a switch, similar to the one found on door jambs, on the other end of the lever that activates the light.

I had fun with some electrical stuff too today. For some reason my left turn signal wasn't working but my right one was. The rear was working fine but the dash indicator and front grill light wasn't. I just jiggled the bulkhead connecters a bit and voila, front light worked. After a scraped up hand, the dash light was reseated and it worked fine. I'm putting some thought into making my own custom dash with a small neon light to provide the backlighting for the dash/gauges so I don't have to worry about those pesky bulbs any more.

Neon would be cool, but I think only incandescent bulbs would give you the ability to adjust the brightness of it. At least I'm pretty sure anyways.

The only thing I would think the light would be for would be low pressure in the brake system, but then again, there is a contact on the ebrake's lever, so could it possibly be both?

The light is also supposed to come on if you lose any hydrolic pressure in the brake system. I know, I blew a wheel cylinder once......

I never bother with the dimmer adjustment I always have it full brightness. If its dark enough to warrant the dash lights its dark enough to have em on full brightness imho.

Light coming on with pressure loss? Is there a pressure sensor in the brake lines somewhere?

My brake light came on just before the pedal hit the floor when my brakes needed a good bleading. it took a couple of days of "I think the brakes are getting soft" then the pedal just faded to the floor and the light came on. A couple of quick pumps and the car stopped.

The pressure sensor is part of the proportioning valve in disk brake cars, and part of the junction box on drum brake cars. They are mounted down line from the master cylinder, usually on the frame.
