Hey all, I could use a little advice. I got a low mileage 71 225 for my A100 van. It had sat in a shed for several years so I went ahead and took it apart to inspect it. Every thing inside looked very good; really clean and little to no wear on the cylinders and bearings. I went ahead and put in new value seals and put it back together with new gaskets. It’s been running very good; good temp and oil pressure. Last week it started running hotter than usual and I noticed there is oil getting into the radiator from somewhere although the oil doesn’t show any signs of coolant. It’s not missing, still runs smooth. If this was a head gasket; wouldn’t I have a miss or show coolant in the oil? Any thoughts?

Of course the oil pressure is greater than the water pressure.
Oil pressure is what 60#s
Radiator cap 14#s? :roll:

Either there is a bad gasket or a crack in the head or block.

Remove the temp. sender right on the top front of the head.
Install a Schroeder valve.
It is the same as the valve used for tires, but with threads on both ends.
Any hardware store should have them.
Now you can pressurize the cooling system and listen for leaks at the valve cover oil fill spout. Don't pump in more air than the radiator can handle. 14#s?
Needs very little pressure to hear it.
If you don't have access to compressed air.
You can use a hand held bicycle tire pump

I use these to check for leaks between the water jacket, intake, and exhaust systems.

I was just trying to say that there is probably enough of a seal that the water pressure won't get to the oil passages, but the oil pressure can get to the water passage.

So it looks like the pressurized oil comes up through the block into the head back through a port by the rear divers side head bolt, then up through the last rocker arm shaft mounting boss and into the rocker arm shaft. Is that right? There's also a cooling port between the head and block right next to the oil port; seems like a likely spot where the oil could be pushing into the cooling passage.

It sounds to me like the head gasket is in the early stages of failure. What do the spark plugs look like?

Not sure, I'll have to check this weekend. I used a new Fel-pro gasket and sprayed it with Copper Coat; you'd think it would have lasted more that a few months. But it's possible.

That might be your problem. FelPro head gasket should be used as is out of the package. No additional sealer.

Possibly; i've always done that on older engines to ensure a good seal and haven't had issues. But at this point anything is possible. As soon as I get some time I'm going to try some testing to see what I can come up with.

Pulled all the plugs last night and they look fine. I also drained the radiator and the coolant came out clean. All the goo is laying on top of the radiator; i'm starting to wonder if this was junk in the block from sitting for years that got flushed into the radiator when I started running it. I'm going to flush the cooling system and see if it reappears.

So far so good, ran it for a few days with a can of radiator flush in it, then flushed it out and filled with fresh coolant. Drove it all weekend and no issues so far.
