Hi folks, just new here. Does anyone have any experience with the Performance Distributors E.I kit which they have recently put on the market? I tend to keep things as original as I can, but I could be open to a good ignition upgrade if it is worthwhile. I am a conservative driver, hardly over 100kph but I would appreciate better cold starting, cold idling and, with the price of fuel here in New Zealand, improved economy! There seem to be a lot of options out there, some cheap and probably a waste of time and others not so cheap. I read a couple of good articles about the P.D unit and it sounds like they have created something decent that is easy to install. Not cheap though, especially to freight to N.Z. I have linked the stories below. The second article states that the unit requires a constant 14 volts to function reliably and I am not sure whether my old alternator delivers that. I sent a question to P.D about this but they didn't respond like some places don't. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/making-slant-six-sense/ https://www.moparmax.com/2017/september ... wires.html |

That ignition system has NO vacuum advance. So I believe fuel economy will suffer. |

Exactly. I was an avid Hot Rod reader from 1978 to 2000, never missed an issue. Then it became apparent I was basically paying for advertisements and haven't bought one since.

I don't think that their Performance Distributors electronic ignition upgrade kit has much of a performance advantage over the DIY HEI upgrade SlantSixDan has laid out. Although it's slightly neater to mount the ignition module on the distributor, you would still have to pull the distributor to access it. I think it's better to mount the ignition module on the inner fender where you could also mount a heat sink underneath it, which also keep it a lot cleaner. See HEI Ignition Upgrade for how I did my ignition system. If you're concerned about a non-stock appearance, you could also mount it inside a gutted Mopar EI module. See Killer $75 new ignition system...GM module. I already hear the screams! |
