what is involve if I was to go from 9" drum to 10" drums?....for a 1970 duster...also is there a difference between a regular 9" drum as compared to a 9" finned drum? will eventually go to disk later, just trying to get the Duster on the road.....I also will need both front fenders, has anyone tried those fiberglass ones from one of the after market firms...or just try to find some rust free old ones.....thanks....Jerry |

The 9" drums on my '72 Valiant stop better than the 10" drums on my '70 Duster... Go figure. Both have 9" rear brakes. The 9" fronts are wider than the 10's if memory serves correctly, but I don't remember the exact dimensions. I have a friend with a bunch of Valiants and Darts with various brake set-ups, and he swears the same thing with his cars. I'm NOT saying the 9" are better than the 10". Just that the difference is likely marginal at best. Simple swap, though. Just change backing plates, drums, shoes and associated hardware. I'm pretty sure the wheel cylinders are different, too. I thought you also had to change the spindle? |

I'm reasonably sure they are the same. I've never done the swap from 9" to 10" on the front, so I could be wrong. 10" to 11" (B-body) is the same spindle. Can anyone verify regarding the 9" spindle? "DW" |

I went from 9" to 10" on the front of my '66 last year. You have to change the complete brake assembly, hub, wheel bearings, spindle, and brake hoses. ![]() I stayed with drum brakes because someone gave me a set. It does stop better than the 9" brakes did, but if I had to buy all the parts I would go to disc or just leave it alone. ![]() |
