Question. My race engine block/head shave adds up to 0.2 inches less than stock. With a higher lift race cam, I figured I needed to shim my rocker assembly or get shorter pushrods. 0.2 is a lot to compensate for with rocker assembly shims so it isn't my preferred choice. The biggest problem I see with shorter pushrods is that they would be a custom order and I would need extra in case of breakage. This got me to wondering, what if I took a stock set of lifters (solid lifter cam) and machined the push rod 'hole' deeper by 0.2"? This would let me use readily available, stock length pushrods. Since the lifters are one piece, I don't see a problem with this. Has anyone considered or done this? Can anyone see why this would not work? |

If you are running stock push rods with lots of seat pressure / high rpm's etc.. you might more easily bend one. I have always ordered 14 pushrods from smith brothers for my builds, but have never needed the extra 2 yet. Greg |

Don't know the answer to your question but I would just buy a set of Smith brothers in 3/8" diameter and you are done. They are larger and stronger than stock. If you did a regrind that will take some of you .200 away also. Rocker arm shims a tricky proposition to get right and I have definitely seen broken stands from people trying it. |

Your calculations thus far really mean nothing. Until you get the motor put together and measure anything else is just a guess. Trying to shim the rockers up .200" is a losing proposition. As said before, you would likely end up with broken stands. The big issue with drilling the lifter out is you physically can't do it. The lifter material is harder than the hubs of hell, and would probably split if you could drill it. Another vote for Smith Brothers. I have used 3 sets of them and have not killed any yet. Their website and order form are fairly easy to use. A checking pushrod is also easy to make out of a stock one. Measure twice, order once, and be happy. I think my last set of 14 cost $145 shipped, and I had a couple extra cost options. |
