I refurbished my grill. OMG, so much work, but I think it looks good. I didn't use argent silver as the factory did, I used the charcoal metallic like I used on my home made ralleye wheels, artistic license.

This looks great. I was just thinking about doing this to my ‘67 as I wait on spring to get here. Can you tell us what you used to get the old flat black off and which grits of sandpaper, polish, and cleaner used to get those shinny bits all nice and sparkly

I used 0000 steel wool to get the old black off, it came off pretty easily. For the perimeter edge I was more aggressive, used some 220 wet sanding, then to finer grits so I could polish the perimeter edge (you have to remove the anodizing to polish it). I chose to clear coat the polished aluminum. The rest of it was just painted, but I clear coated the whole thing at the end. There is a way to remove anodizing chemically, I haven't tried it. It is 3 tablespoons of lye per gallon of water, soak 20 minutes with some agitation. Aluminum is pretty sensitive to acids and bases so if you do try this, watch it carefully, don't go off to lunch or something, you may come back to a badly pitted piece. I'm sure it works fine, I just didn't want to try it on my grill because I only wanted the perimeter edge anodizing removed, not the whole thing. In retrospect I would have used the chemical etch over all that sanding.

Very nice work, it will look great on the car. Lots of work for sure, but I am sure you think it was worth it now.

Wow, looks great. This is really a super show car you are constructing.

All the best,

Looks great!

I also did the same project 5 or 6 years ago, you ain't kidding about the amount of work it takes revive these. I had to removed dents from the outer surround trim that goes around the headlights; lots of tapping and filing to get those straight. Painting is the easy part of the job.

I have a 67 GT with the aluminum trunk panel. It was dented, gouged, and real nasty when I got the car, once again lots of tap tap taping, and sanding to bring that thing back to half decent condition before painting it.

Its the little details like these that make an old car perk-up. These projects are good in that one need not spend a lot of dough on supplies, it's all labor.
