Not sure where this should be, but since it is a race motor related question here it is. I went to install my new cam in the race motor. When I degreed the cam it was at 104 and I want to go to 100. I have the premium Rollmaster gear set and as some of you know that gear on the crank fits very tight. I told the engine shop to enlarge the inside diameter but apparently they did not go far enough. I have not been able to move it with 2 pry bars (One on either side) even after heating up the gear some. So I need to invest in a proper puller and would like your guidance on what style to get? So if you have pulled this gear off, (A really tight one) please tell me what type puller you used. There is not a whole lot of room between the gear and the block to get a thick jawed puller in. Rick, if you have an AutoZone close by get a puller from their tool loan program. Usually the loaners are OTC tools, actually decent stuff. If it works, take it back and they refund your money, if it does not fit, take it back and they refund your money. But I bet a gear puller will get it free pretty quickly. Put a bolt or a thick washer into the crank end so you protect the internal threads. |

We have split bearing puller at work that are thin to get bearings off of shafts that you can't get a jaw puller on. I think ours are OTC. You would clamp it together under the gear, then use studs and a flat bar that would lay on the end of the crank for support to pull it off. It's easier than it sounds. |

I put the crank bolt in (to protect the crank) and then use one of the three arm gear pullers. Works every time (don't ask how many times I have changed the cam on a motor that has 0 run time on it). |
