Post subject:  1961 Savoy
I sold my last 1961 Savoy 2dr HT with a /6 and have regretted it ever since. A friend was taking the back roads of Louisiana and saw this 1961 Savoy 2dr Sedan. A week later it was crossing the state line to Arkansas. I was going to sell it but its worth more to me as a beater to go to shows in. I pulled the plugs today and realized its a non drool tube engine meaning its not original. Starter was dragging and has been removed. I have another '60 Dodge with a /6 that I'll rob the starter off of. How can I tell what year the engine is??? I have 3 "Super 6" sets up but will wait till I have it running to see the condition of the engine. What spark plugs is everyone use these days. Thanks for ya'lls help.

Look for numbers a the front of the block. Passenger side on a little lip right beside the valve cover.

Since that Valve cover Has a barcode sticker on it it It's a safe assumption that that is a peanut plug head motor from 78-87

That is of course assuming that the newer valve cover was not placed on an older engine!

Rick is referring to the Stamped pad behind the alternator -it will be covered in rust and grime 'fo sho'

That probably weighs about the same as the 65 Coronet 2-door sedan that I had.
225, 3-on-the-tree, 50k miles, shot interior but straight as an arrow.
Not the fastest, but the best driving original car that I ever owned.
Shoulda kept it instead of selling it to the guy who made a Max Wedge clone out of it...

Oddly enough, I still have one piece of that car - the steering shaft.
When he removed the column he used a red wrench right above the coupler since he was converting to p/s and a floor shift.
I salvaged the column and saved the shaft for use as a pry bar and drift.

Anyhow, back to the 61 - nice rescue! Can't wait to see it in action again.
Does it have the hydraulic valvetrain?

I think it needs an era-appropriate Sonoramic Slant decal 8)

Thanks guys. I'll follow up on engine ID. It has some Champion plugs that I'll clean and re-install till I get it running. Don't want to throw money at it till I hear it running. I have a 25k mile Super 6 engine in a wrecked car but waiting for the right car to put it in. I'll post an update once its running. Is a peanut head good or bad??? I'm not up on the terminology.

Peanut heads work well; they just look a little different since the side of the head wraps around the plug seats.
The plugs are smaller than the older ('drool tube') style, which led to the 'peanut' nickname.
Possible disadvantages (depending on your point of view) include the inability to remove lifters with the head installed and the fact that they weigh a little more.

One of my favorite Mopar body styles ever! That is likely a hydraulic lifter engine, seeing as how it has the valve cover decal. Easiest way to tell is pop open the oil cap and shine a flashlight in there. If there are no valve lash adjusters, it's hydraulic.
