Post subject:  69 Valiant spindle nut size with 9” drums
Hello. Does anybody know the spindle nut size for a 69 Valiant with 9” drums? Every parts house only sells 3/4x16 and 3/4x20. Everywhere I look online it’s the same thing. They all say “except for 9” drums”. The parts houses and google all come back with 3/4x16 but mine is even finer. Finer than 3/4x20. I’m having such a hard time finding the right size. It is all original, just a very fine thread 3/4 nut I can’t seem to identify or find anywhere?

I have some 9" Drums and original spindle that I pulled off a 64 Dart. I know it's not the same as your 69... but I can get to them next week maybe and investigate and see what size that is.

I don't know that they make anything other then 3/4" -16 fine and 3/4" -10 coarse.

I got my spindle nuts off of the 64 dart 9" brake spindle.

Its definitely not unf 3/4-16.

Looks more like unef 3/4-20 but i will verify with thread gauge at work tomorrow.

I went to Pick N Pull and just started popping dust caps off until I found one that matched. Everything seemed to be 3/4x16 and 3/4x20. I found a late 80s Nissan mini pickup truck and found a match. I’m not sure of the size but if I had to guess it’s metric, (m19x1.5 if that’s even a size?). I’ll try to ID the replacement I found. 9” drums have an oddball [metric?] not the standard 3/4x16 or 20. Post your results if you can find and I will too in case anyone ever needs to know! Thank you

A 1.5 metric would be the same as 16.93 threads/inch
1.25 = 20.32 tpi
1.0 = 25.4 tpi

Good information, it must be 1.0 or close. I’ve never identified a nut like this on the Valiant so I am at a loss of terminology here is a picture. The left side with the spiked castle lock came from a late 80s Nissan mini pickup. The other side with the flat square lock washer came from the 69 Valiant 9” drums. Both nuts fit. Image

Checked with a thread gauge this morning.

It's 3/4 -24 Which is a pretty oddball thread..

But it does exist.

Lookup UNS 3/4-24.

I doubt it's metric as the m1.0 thread gauge does not fit the thread-form correctly.

Do you need one of those nuts?

The nut on the left is slightly finer (25.4 vs 24 tpi)

They both show 8 threads, but the nut on the right looks thicker.

If the Nissan nut was thicker, it probably wouldn't work.

The thread pitches are close enough that it works with the given nut thickness.

One last thought:

I measured the Internal Ø of the threads and it comes out to 0.645"

is it possible that this could be an 11/16-24? instead of 3/4"-24?

@emsvitil Thank you for your input! The Nissan one: is the same thickness just a slightly smaller hex its good as long as it fits in the hub, on the threads and does its job ( It started to thread but i didnt go past the cotter pin, ran out of time.) . Nobody tapped new threads on this, it's original. The axle nuts I looked up on Rock auto for that car all said "except for 9' drums" I couldnt find m18x1.0.

@Greg Ondayko Thank you for looking that up!. No luck finding UNS 3/4-24 spindle / axle / nut anything on Google, just odd fittings and taps and dyes. I will look into that, 11/16-24 and let you know if i end up needing one!

I will follow up with what ends up working, still have to put the studs, bearings, hub and drum all back together. Need time, follow up soon.

I threaded both nuts on hand tight. The Nissan one is on the left, the stock one is on the right. The Nissan one has too much lateral play (< .010” ~) and the stock one has tighter lateral play ( <.005” ~). They’re almost the same but I would not trust running it, wrong size still. So maybe it is 11/16-24 or 3/4-24 but I cannot find these anywhere. ”. Greg Ondayko I’ll pm you about the one you have, if we can work something out that would be great.
