Is this Factory to have an 8 3/4 rear end in a 1965 Dodge Coronet with a slant 6? I don't believe it is but I figured I would ask as mine hasn't 8 3/4 rear end. There is no cover on the back pumpkin everything comes out the front. And according to identification charts it's 8 3/4.

There is a casting number on the left of the differential carrier assembly just aft of the driveshaft yoke towards the bottom. If you can give us that number we can help ID the thing. It may be that you have the smaller carrier and gear set that was used in light duty applications.

From what I can see on the casting number it's a 741 have to jack it up and climb under further to get the full casting number

They did come factory-equipped with 8 3/4" axles, but with 'light duty' (still plenty strong for our purposes) differentials and bolt-on axle flanges.
Is there a large nut in the center of the wheel studs?

65 was the first year to switch to 'regular' slide in axles and the rear would be regular u-joints. The automatic transmissions were cable shifted and had the CV joint style at the transmission end. 8 3/4 were standard in B body cars, my 65 Belvedere came from the factory with the 8 3/4 and is a slant six powered from the factory. Any 8 3/4 center section will work. If you are lucky, there will still be a metal tag under one of the bolts holding the center section in. The tag would have the gear ratio on it.
Let's hear it for slant powered B bodies.

I will look for a tag tomorrow and there is no nut in hub center. I going v8 318 or 360 and was happy to see 8 3/4 rear end.

Thanks for the refresher Matt.
I remember now that I was glad that my 65 Coronet didn't have the bolt-on flanges.

To the OP, may I say: Ouch :(
