Post subject:  A904 vs 904 insight and question?

I have a question, I picked up a tranny vibration in my 64 Valiant Signet 200 convertible, it’s a 225 with push button A904. Checked U joints and ball and trunion, both look great. Rear end and wheel bearings are all good. There is lots of end play on the tail shaft and the vibration comes under acceleration and almost goes away at driving speed when the tranny fluid pressure is up. I have an opportunity to put a 904 in out of a 73 valiant with a 225, and I can get a drive shaft with the slip yoke needed for this tranny. What is the differences? Is a 73 904 partial throttle kick down? Mine is full throttle kick down. I also have an 8 1/4 rear end that was put in when it was switched over to a master power disc brake front end kit with a 4 1/2” bolt pattern. I also have a local available original push button A904 rebuilt tranny that I can purchase. Is the 73 with the slip yoke worth the upgrade or just a quick swap with the A904 rebuilt? Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated.. thank you. Pat

Well, for starters, there is no direct conversion between the early cable shift and the later transmissions. You would need to get a shifter. Then there is the issue with the crank/torque converter hub, 68 and later are larger than the earlier ones.
jus sayin.

This does sound like some B & T issues I have seen.

Remove the nuts from the trunion flange. Put 1 or 2 flat washers on each stud, between the two flanges, and reinstall the nuts. This will position the balls in a different (unworn) place in the housing. See if that changes the amount of vibration.

Just did it and the vibration went away.. I can’t thank you enough! Does anyone make a conversion to a u joint? Or do I need to change to a slip yoke tranny? Thank you again!
