Ahoy, fellow slant six nuts!

This is my first post on this website, but I’ve been a member for close to nine years, I believe. I’ve been to the Redwood City swapmeets several times, along with my brother (redfourjohnd on here), who brings the only slant six ‘68 Charger I’ve ever seen at the swap meet.

I can’t tell you what an incredible resource everyone’s contributions have been to keeping my car on the road, seriously.

I’ve recently installed a hopped-up 225, and have an edelbrock 1406 carburetor sitting on an Offenhauser intake with an adapter plate in between them. I’d like to know what kind of air cleaner setup I’ll be able to use.

I’ve done the ball of aluminum foil mashed between carb and hood, but after I think I’ve got it figured out and make a cardboard mock-up I find that my measurements must have been off, because it won’t fit. There’s got to be something I’m missing, and I guess I need help, hopefully from somebody who’s done the same thing.

In brief: Which air cleaner setup will work on my ‘62 Signet now that it’s got an Edelbrock Performer (with electric choke) on the 225, including an adapter plate?

I’d rather keep the stock appearance, but whatever works, you know? Carb hat, plenum, hood scoop, or just a real deep drop-base air cleaner (my first choice, but can’t figure how low I need it to be)?

Hit me with those ideas, baby!

Thanks!

I kind of went through this same question. What I did was put the car on jack stands and close the hood carefully with no air cleaner stud. I then reached through from under the car and I could estimate the space I had to work with. I would think you could use a drop base with a open element around 2 inches with no problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, i didn’t even think of going from underneath. Jacks stands would definitely help. I don’t know if I can get my arms in there, but if not I’ll ask someone skinny.

I was thinking of closing the hood with my phone inside the engine compartment while recording s video so I could see how close the hood is, maybe with a ruler standing up for scale. I like the idea of feeling around, too, i think I’ll give it a try tomorrow.

It seems I had more room under the hood than I thought.

I picked up an Edelbrock 10x2” air cleaner assembly at Autozone (#1203), and the hood closes without the air cleaner rubbing, even after a short drive. Simplest thing I’ve done to the car in ten years, really. No modifications were needed, it just fit like I wanted it to, and that was really cool.

I had it in my head that this was going to be more difficult with the low hood, but I’m glad I was wrong. Another mystery solved!

I figured I’d leave this information here for someone else that might need it in the future. In case they, like me, are too stupid to just go into town and buy something to see if it’ll fit.

Hey, guys? I was only messing around about the whole “stupid” thing, honestly.
