Good morning slant 6ers.. I have a question.. How much could I safely tow with my 1981 D150. Slant 6 of course. 3.5 rear end. NP435 transmission. Class IV tow hitch. I am hoping to two a 30 foot travel trailer. I can't seem to find the answer on line. Owners manual is non existent. |

You do not have the horsepower required to move that trailer at highway speeds across anything other than flat ground. The frontal area of the trailer eats horsepower regardless of weight. You can tow probably 5,000 lbs, but if the frontal area is much greater than the truck you won't be able to tow at speed. |

That's what I thought. I was planning on using my truck to move the trailer out of the spot it is currently at. A tow truck would take it from there. Because of the tight space, the tow truck would have a hard time maneuvering. I have to admit,,, I was tempted!! |

If just a short distance, and not uphill, you should be fine. You may burn up your clutch if it is even a little uphill and you are not careful. Lou |

It may have the big clutch setup? But yes, 5000# is a chunk of weight for something with 100HP. A short distance on fairly level ground should be fine. Any mountains or big hills I'd say no. You not only need to get it moving you have to stop it. So be cautious. Good luck!

I towed my Valiant from PA to CA with my 4 cylinder Toyota (22RE , 116hp) engine...…………. Bed was full of junk too. So that's about 5000lbs without the torque of a slant 6 |

I towed my racecar all over the east coast, with my Toyota 22RE also. One time hit the scales at 9980 lbs.Bed was full of junk too. So that's about 5000lbs without the torque of a slant 6 Also used my 84 D-100 slant six A833 od to tow the race car from Fl, to Ky, and back. Probably had about 5,000 of weight. But not near the wind drag of a coach. |

You will be ok with the np435 for short distance. Clutch will be fine. |

Only planning to tow it a few miles.. But seems I might be better off towing with my 2000 suburban,, it has the 5.3 engine. May sound funny or even unreal.. But my D150 feels stronger than the suburban,, the suspension on the D150 is a lot stronger and bigger. |
