Post subject: | Problem with Race transmission |
Hello all, Installed a Transgo3 shift kit in the transmission for the race car. Followed the instructions meticulously. Installed it for full manual control. This transmission is the one that was in my Gray truck running fine. Just removed it since it had the V8 internals and installed the shift kit with my new convertor. Problem is I only have reverse and 1st gear. No upshifts. Fluid level is good. Shifter is the one I have always run. Park Reverse and neutral all appear to be in the right place. Please help if you can. I am up against the clock for next weeks race. Yes I know I probably did something! But I still need help!! Rick |

I think thats the one I had in ruster before I got the A&A valvebody. Be sure to have the kickdown connected or wire it 7/8 to 15/16 of it total travel back. The links provided are good too. Greg |

Yes I reviewed that article as I went. I have tried the kickdown arm fully back and released with no difference. Just for information: My TG-3 kit says nothing about the position of that lever or what to do with it. I looked 18 times and it says squat!! I did replace the strut that they say is weak with the heavy duty one. I don't remember which band that is for? But I definitely have only 1st gear & reverse. Ok, I went back and looked and it is the 2nd gear band strut. Does the 2nd gear band stay applied in 3rd? MAybe that strut fell out or something? Not sure how it could since I had to adjust it. Thanks, Rick |

If it is back too far could that cause a problem? I had it pulled fully back.

Probably not. My guess is that the park rod/ vb is not totally seated.. but until you start checking pressures etc. you wont know for sure. You can always go back to the valve body you had before. Greg |

As in not bolted into the main case tightly??? Or do you mean something else? It was put together and worked on, on and engine stand. It dropped right into place without any issues that I remember.Where can I find the pressure to check and when. I would guess I need to check the 2nd gear servo pressure? but what should it be? Thanks for the help. |

From old manuals, front kick down servo, no apply pressure or out of adjustment. Pressure test port on passenger side of case. Drop valve body apply air pressure into front servo apply passage ,band should tighten and release after air removed. use your own spec if this not orignal part. Just a guess |

Real quick. TF-3 manual shift, the throttle pressure valve does nothing, you do not need to do anything with the lever. 1st uses the rear clutch and the over running (rear) sprag with the manual VB. (with a stock VB the rear band would be used in manual low). 2nd uses the rear clutch and front band 3rd uses the rear clutch and front clutch reverse uses the front clutch and rear band. based on that you have 1st and reverse, the rear clutch is working, as is the rear band. That leaves the front band (KD) circuit as the problem. What happens when you shift to 3rd? |

Rick, just though of something. Did you try the shifts with a load on the drive train? Such as either having the wheels on the ground, or using the brakes if wheels in the air. I had the same situation some years ago, and didn't think I was getting a shift. Had to load the drive train to feel the shift(s). |

It does nothing when I shift into 3rd either. I did try holding the brakes and still could not feel it change. I did disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever to try and make sure it was actually dropping into the detents. In other words not way out of adjustment or something. I can put it down and take it for a run up the road, but I have run all my other transmissions up on the stands and could tell an obvious difference in wheel speed when it changed gears. |
