Hi slanters..
Question.
What 5speed or 6speed or people placing behind the slant of a D150 truck??
Tossing around the idea of swapping out my NP435 for something a bit more freeway friendly.

In the US there were some 92-93 D150's with the magnum v8's that came with 5 speeds - It had a granny gear, aluminum case etc. I am not sure what model #/ trade name was used for those transmissions however.

I have been looking at the gear vender overdrive. And it seems like a good option. At $3,000.00.... I will have to save up for some time.
Does anyone here use it? Maybe some feed back from some of the members.

The Gear Vendors overdrive and the ability to split gears is probably the best performing package unless you got yourself a G56 6-speed cheap (ha!) and could adapt it economically. Most anything other than the Gear Vendors will not bolt to the /6, for transmissions with an integral bellhousing, or to the bellhousing in the case of a transmission with a bolt-on bellhousing.

The only thing that will bolt in place of the NP435 and is closer ratio is the NP4530 which Dodge calls the NP445. The NP4530 is fully syncronized and had 4.56, 2.28, 1.31, 1:1 ratios while the NP435 is usually 6.68, 3.34, 1.66, 1:1. There may be 4.78, 2.39, 1.37, 1:1, but that one appears to have been used in earlier trucks before the NP4530/445 was introduced. I consider the NP4530 to be the best 4-speed manual transmission for highway towing. It can be identified by the blue tag with ratio 4.78.

The NV4500 is geared much like the NP435, but adds an overdrive. It's still a wide-ratio transmission. For a while I drove a 1996 Dodge 3500 4x4 with a V10 and the NV4500. It was fine until I used it to pull a heavy load in the hills. Loaded I wanted the gears closer together even with 300hp and 450 ft/lbs, but the truck weighed about 8,000 lbs and I was pulling about that much more. Oh, it got 9.5 MPG combined city/highway not towing.

All this said you are still at a massive power deficit compared to a modern truck. It's faster, cheaper and easier to buy a more modern truck for $4000 than to install overdrive in yours. When I needed to tow more I got rid of my 225 powered Club Cab D100 and bought a 1972 B300 van with a 318. I'd do it again without hesitation.

Got me there... Although I plan to eventually put a turbo Slant into that if I get around to it or this engine quits. His truck came with a Slant.

I like the way my truck drives as is. I enjoy going 55 mph on long trips in Mexican country roads with my beautiful wife sitting next to me on the bench seat. Recently, I moved to an areas that forces me on the highway. Driving my 2000 4x4 lifted suburban is killing my economy. Gas prices in California is way above $4.00 per gallon. I would rather use my truck. But as we all know, there beautiful beasts were not made with today's highway conditions in mind. I figured an over drive might help. I don't want to buy another car.. doing that would force me to get rid of one of my current cars.. And I don't want to do that.

Why not an A833 OD?

I tried that tranny.. It could just be me.. but my truck didn't feel like a truck..So I went back to the NP435.

How about a rear gear swap instead?
Should be cheaper and easier.
If you swap in an 8 3/4 housing you could swap centers in a short time as needed.
You could drop down to 3.2 or 2.9 (I'm assuming 3.55 now) and the 435's low first gear will still get you going.

Interesting idea..
I might already have the 8 3/4. The rear end is very beefy. How do I go about measuring to know what I have?Anyone else think this might be a good option?

Your D150 should have the 9 1/4" rear end. It should have a 12 bolt cover that looks something like a stop sign. While not flawless they are pretty good, but a gear change is quite involved.
