About 25 years ago, or more, I took a slipping 998 out of a 5th Avenue and stored it carefully by leaving it outside in the dirt....

So now that I've driven my 68 Valiant and (of course) the trans is leaking from every possible location, I'm planning to pull it out and go through it with a full rebuild. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to use the 2.74 gearset out of the 998 to help pep up the 225/2.76 combination....

Even though the 998 had a little dirt in the pan (see pic), the gears still look nice and oily.

So my question is....has anyone actually done this, and if so, are there any 'catches' to look out for?

Be careful for a couple of reasons:

1. Not just the gears. You need the governor assembly that goes with them, or it won't shift right no matter how you adjust the linkage.

2. I had an idea very similar to yours when I was working up a trans for my '65 years ago: Hey, better acceleration plus quiet highway cruising with the wide-ratio gears! The trans went together fine, and I hated it. The gaps/jumps between gears were too large. I put up with it for longer than I should have, then wound up much happier once I swapped in a trans with the ordinary ratios. I think those wide-ratio Torqueflites are best suited to the stupid-tall rear axle ratios (2.45, 2.26) in the heavy '80s cars with their weak, wheezy engines.

I also like the closer ratios (original 904) better.

Hmm.. OK thanks guys. Good background. Maybe I'll just stick with stock. Seems a shame I babied that 998 all those years, for nothing!
