Finally got the cursed slant six running, but now that its idle is somewhat below 2k RPM I can hear an awful metallic clatter at idle. Oil pressure is good, gets 25-32PSI at idle. There were a couple of startups where it immediately jumped up to 2k rpm, would this have bent a pushrod? Planning on taking the valve cover off when I get the chance but seeing as how it makes good pressure I can't imagine it's rodknock. |

Got the valve cover off, nothing seems to be out of place, once again worried that it might be a lower end issue. |

It could be a million things. Given the engine has been cursed, 2 million. Bottom end issues seldom 'clatter'....if they do, they don't do it for long. It could be a loose torque converter bolt hitting the stamped steel cover. Or a loose 'whatever'. You haven't given nearly enough detail to make any further suggestions. |

If you have a harbor freight nearby they have mechanics stethoscopes for $4 |

Any 3 foot long "stick" can be used. Place one end of the "stick" against, the engine and the other against your ear. Move "stick" around until you find the clatter. Once you find the clatter, you can make an intelligent guess on the cause. Otherwise you are just guessing. |

With all the computer-driven capabilities of today, it's surprising no one is selling a tool/sensor that you stick on an engine that can analyze noises. |

Did you actually check valve lash? Rocker shaft bolt torque? It wouldn't take much for a rattle. Also, converter bolts. They don't have to back out far to hit the cover. |

I'll check the converter bolts. I'm the one who torqued them so there's a 99% chance I did it wrong and one's loose. Valve lash and rocker shaft bolts are fine. It's more of a knock than a clatter, and only at idle. Can't run it today as I'm letting some RTV dry.
Also, converter bolts. They don't have to back out far to hit the cover. |

Alright, after running it today and listening with a stethoscope, it sounds like just about damn near everything is making way more noise than it should. Of course, it's got a FRAM filter on it, so when I get the chance I'll do an oil and filter change and see if that helps. I'm concerned the filter has done what all fFRAM products normally do and collapsed in on itself. |
