Does anyone know what size tires my '64 Dart should have for the speedo to be close to acurate. I have 13 " rims. I have two sizes on there now. The "old" style is C78-13. The other tires are 185/80 R13. The speedo seems to be reading faster than I'm going. I plan on checking this by driving next to my wife on the freeway. What is the widest tires I can put on these rims? Thanx !!!

If your rims are stock then they are 4.5" wide and you will be limited to 185 width tire at the very most. Slants came with 6.50 X 13 tires in about a 85 aspect ratio. One chart I found at http://rogerkrausracing.com/oldtire.html says that tire was about 24.7 inches in diameter. The closest thing still on the market for cars is a 185/80 x 13. Tires.com and Tire Rack both list the Yokohama Aegis LS4 in that size. It looks pretty good and it's even a whitewall! Again, that's the max size tire you should put on the car. Frankly you'd do better to find a set of small bolt pattern 14"x 5 or 5.5" wide wheels and put a 195/70 tire that is almost the same diameter. The choice of tires increases exponentially and they will handle much better and safer than the old 13" doughnuts. Good luck. |

Thanks for the info. 63GT I'm in Sacramento. I'm gonna put 185/80 r13 all around for now. I would like to get some new rims (and brakes) soon. I guess if I go to discs up front, I can get a 15" rim? Then the rear axles need to be changed too? Right now, I'm focusing on 2bbl/dual exhaust. This site is great !!! |

sixty4Dart would be advisible to convert rear axle to the LBP if you go to disc, Don't won't to carry around two spares. Go to the yard and find a 8.25 rear while your at it and some 15 rims. Suggest you read some of the post in this section as we have some amazing talent (you know who you are) when it comes to upgrading these A bodies......Dave |

I have run into this before. You need the rear axle ratio to be able to figure out which speedo drive pinion that you need to make your speedo read rite. With that and the tire size that you are using, most factory service manuals have a chart that will tell you which pinion gear that you need. Cheeck with a trans shop or if you have a Dodge dealer that has been around a while nearby, they should be able to look it up in the parts catalog for you. I know that this info carried over to the microfish, but not sure if they deleted it when they went to the present computer parts lookup system. These usually cost less than $10 each once you find out which one you need. Many tranny shops have a bucket full of them hiding over in the corner that they would let you dig thru for the right one. They are color coded and also the last 2 numbers of the part number is also the tooth count.

A quality P185/80R13 tire should be about right (24.6 inches tall). Plus, I know they fit fine on the stock rims in my '65 Dart. However, they don't work very well! You need to use a quality name brand tire, preferably an extra load rated one, and keep it inflated to the max preasure (while cold) up front. I tended to get down to about 5/32 inch of tread and have the right front tire blow out on the freeway. Thankfully, my Dart has no noticeable responce to a front blowout - not seeing anyone else pull over after hearing a blowout was my cue to pull over and install the spare (again). I'm currently running some 14 inch American Racing centerline style wheels and P205/70R14 tires. I suspect your old Mopar is going faster than you think! They're quite good at that  Paul G. |
