OK, Again, the following are just my observations concerning early and late distributor mounting styles. Part 1 showed both styles on the early, 1973 block. Part 2 covers the later, 1979 style block.
This pic shows how the 79 block is cast.

The stud is not standard, but to the right of the stud (to the right in the pic-actually towards front of engine)you will see the ledge that gives the claw leverage.

This shot shows that an early style will work on the later blocks because the bolt hole (where the stud is) is in the same place on all the blocks.

So there you have it. The slant six world of distributor mounting, for what it's worth, more or less.
Your results may vary.

Good pictures.

This is just me....but I have lost little sleep over my inability to rotate my early style-equipped distributor 360 degrees. The two slotted holes on the metal plate, along with the ability to jump a tooth if needed, have allowed me to get the engine timed properly every time. :)

Excellent documentation on this arcane bit of slant knowledge. Thanks for doing it.

I would have put everything in one post, but I was limited to 5 photos per post, hence the two parts. But, I am happy to help my fellow slant sixers. For me, it always helps to have photos to show the various differences.
Again, I am not advocating one style mount over the other as being the better way to do things. I am just showing what IS and letting people decide for themselves.

follow up, mine is the older block, but the newer hold down mechanism, and the 90 degree tab thingy for leverage against the block surface isn't leveraging against anything, but that said, my dizzy is snug, not moving.

Correct, this is shown in Part 1.
I, personally, prefer the claw style hold down. I wrote part 1and 2 only to give everyone information on the various combinations, not to promote one over the other. (This topic can be filed with the one concerning how to mount the toilet paper roll - over or under).
