Post subject:  2.5” exhaust for /6?

I have acquired several pieces of 2.5” exhaust with various bends and lengths for free. My only concern is loss of power at the low end RPM range. My /6 is in an ‘85 Dodge D100 2WD automatic trans. It is my daily driver and regularly tows about 2000 pounds. Thanks for the help, and, all my parts have arrived for my HEI conversion, thanks to this forum and users on it.

Use the 2.5 "head pipe" and step-down to 2.25 or 2' thru the muffler.
Step the pipe size down again ( 1.875 or 1.75) for the tailpipe, to keep the noise level down and prevent a 'drone' at higher RPMs.
Works for me...

I installed a 2.5" system with a 2.5" muffler on my dart. It is a bone stock 64 with a pertronix conversion, the power is better at all rpm compared to stock exhaust. The only thing with 2.5" might be a little noisier than some people like.

Just for reference I quit my A body /6 habit in the mid nineties to drive Neons for a long time. Even the 132hp base model neons had 2 1/4" mandrel bent exhausts from the factory. No need to go smaller than that unless you want less noise, and even then I would just throw a resonator at the end instead if it were me.

Those Neons were more powerful than /6's though, lots of stock dyno runs from neons show 115-120 wheel horse power, which no factory /6 had that I am aware of.

"My only concern is loss of power at the low end RPM range."

There is nothing to support that concern here that you have shared, so far, and IMO a 2.5" is smart choice, with little downside.

Thanks for the help. One more thing, “2 bbl super six” is on my profile under my user name. I checked the FAQ page and all the options in my control panel but didn’t find how to change that. I don’t have a super six, it’s just a single bbl bone stock Dodge D100.

It's based on post count

I had 2-1/2" on a bone stock motor in my old Duster. It didn't really do much of anything as far as making the car faster, but it did collect a lot of water in the muffler. I figured it was because the pipes was so big the exhaust was cooling off before it got out. Doug's way of stepping down the pipes makes sense. If you do the 2-1/2 all the way back, drill a few small drain holes in the low spots.
