My '61 D100 has a three speed manual transmission. Anyone know what gearbox it is?

We can probably Id it if you post a picture of it.

A few clues to help us..
Does it have a synchronized 1st gear?

Truck isn't running. I'm hoping to switch to a stronger transmission. I figure there isn't much that will bolt to the cast iron bell housing. The transmission is a top loader and it has an iron case. I'll get a photo. I've read that a Borg Warner T-85 three speed was a heavy duty option but this doesn't look very strong.

I think the T-85 is a side-loader, so my guess is a 745.

Another clue can be the back.. does it have a slip yoke or trunion or does it have a u joint flange on the output?

Transmission has a front u-joint like this : https://www.61-71dodgesweptlineparts.co ... on-yoke-2/

NO idea what a 3 speed top loader would be...

Assuming it is a Sweptline hydraulic clutch bell housing, Any New Process 420, 435, 445 or 540 should fit. Pre 1968 clutches were 8 or 10 coarse splined, later than that and the clutch was a fine spline 23 or something. Older style coarse splined clutches will likely need to be re-built, as modern day parts suppliers only have the later fine splined unit regardless of what they claim.

Its hydro clutch on cast iron bell housing. The speedometer cable connects to the top of the transmission cover. A NP435 would be a reasonable choice. I'd like the NP445 (4350) but these can be hard to find and some parts are no longer available - if I find one in good shape that's what I'd like to use. I also have three aluminum case NP833 O/Ds from D150s, a cast iron A-body 833, an AX15 and a Toyota W58. Its good to know the b/h can accept an easy to find NP435 - not wanting the granny gear but its much stronger than the 3 speed.

I have a NP 445 sitting here for my M37 conversion, and would really like to use it, but creating a stub shaft to connect with the Transfer case has been more difficult than I imagined... IT IS an ideal road transmission.. and I am coming under a time crunch that may force the quick answer of a NP 435 going into it's place in the truck. LMK if you are interested..

Also I have read that some NP 435's have a close ratio gear spacing which takes place of the granny gear, and the long drop in RPM's between 3rd and 4th. Never seen one, but I am still new to this game, and learning my way around.

The transmission that I have is probably not the A745 - those have a hump on the top cover. Doesn't matter too much because I want something better. I believe the door tags on sweptline trucks identify the transmission type.

It could also be an A903, which if I recall has a synchronized 1st gear.

I don't think anyone has swapped an AX-15 to a truck. You can
exchange the internals of a R-154 into an AX-15 if you have them.
I think the AX15 would work well with a truck. The oem version was
rated at 280 lb ft torque capacity, good for a slant six. Aisin produces
a replacement AX15 which is stronger - I don't know what parts are
upgraded, but parts are available. I have the slant six to small block
adapter but I don't think I'd use it as it spaces the transmission further
from the block, requiring a longer input shaft.
