Later narrow-rib block with three-digit casting number on driver's side, so it's late '75 or later. I received it without a head. Stamped number on block deck is "8225 R 7 72F". Based on previous experience, I think the leading 8 makes it a 1978 engine (cast crank). Can anyone confirm? |

That initial 8 should be for 1978. Obviously a 225, and if I recall, the "R" means it uses regular grade fuel. I'm sure if SlantSixDan sees this he'll come up with even more info. ![]() ~THOR~ |

The 1975 engine Dan identified for me had stamped code 5225R 287, and he wrote the following: Quote: 5: 1975 model year
So I'm guessing that this engine (8225R 7 72F) was built on July 72nd, 1978 by a guy named Fred. Actually, an engine assembled as late as July 72nd was probably for the upcoming model year, so maybe it was July 72nd, 1977? 225: Duh 2 8 7: proof Chrysler were in such shambles in 1975 they could lose toilet paper on its way from the roll to their backside. Instead of the 4-digit number referring to the 10,000-day calendar that "should" be there, roughly from 4767 (16 Aug '74) through 5110 (25 July '75), that's an olde-tyme date stamp suggesting the engine was built on 8 February 1975, with the "7" meaning a production line, a shift, or the stamper's favourite number. ![]() |
