I am restomodding a 1960 Valiant wagon. Replacing the 170 /6 with a 225 /6 out of a '60 Dodge. Replacing the 3-spd manual with a 4-spd/OD trans that Brewer's is building for me. Adding a (rare) stock '60 power steering pump. Moved the alternator from low left side to (engine mount) high right side. Front-end disc conversion with a '64 K-member (and appropriate engine mounts). Now for the fun part...aligning all those. How do I know when the engine is sitting properly upright...are there any guidelines on if or how much I should shim the engine mounts? And where can I find a crank pulley with two grooves to accommodate the power steering belt? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Parks

I believe that you can use one of the pulleys that either bolts to the front or back of the balancer, depending on your situation.

Why do you think you have to shim the motor mounts? And why would shimming the motor mounts have anything to do with how the belts and pulleys line up? As long as you are using all factory slant six parts, belt alignment shouldn't be an issue. The power steeering belt sheave bolts to the front of the vibration damper on the crank hub. Don't overthink things, its a slant six.

I suppose it's theoretically possible that a later K-member could change the engine's alignment with respect to the rear diff pinion shaft (which would cause driveline vibration), but it's not something I'd be worried about unless the K-member was custom or adapted from an entirely different vehicle. I doubt Chrysler changed the factory pinion angle between '60 and '64.

Study and measure any stock (or properly-made aftermarket) intake manifold. You'll find the carb mount pad is tilted forward. That's because the engine is installed with a rearward tilt; the tilted carb mount pad is so the carb is level when the engine is installed.

You're likely to run into issues with this swap. Nothing that can't be worked around, but the '60 Valiant was not designed to accommodate the 225 engine. A fair number of tweaks and changes were made in '61 to accommodate the 225 and the right-side alternator mount, etc.

As for your power steering: the stock setup on a '60 Valiant moved the alternator way up high on the manifold side; its pivot bolt went through a specially-equipped thermostat housing. Meanwhile, the P/S pump was down below where the alternator was on cars without P/S. The '61-up cars with P/S had an extra belt sheave bolted onto the front of the crank pulley (and if there was A/C, another '61 intro, a third sheave was bolted to the rear of the crank pulley). Not sure which beltline the '60 P/S setup used, but on-the-front and on-the-rear sheaves aren't too awfully hard to get hold of with a want ad.
