Dried up output seal and resulting fluid leak led me to my latest adventure, replacing the output shaft seal on my 1965 Valiant's a904. This seal (TF6 CT6392 12925A or # 12925A), didn't last long and I thought I'd give this seal (National 472466 Oil Seal) a try. Cheap and easy solution is what I strive for. Trunnion boot was ripped and so I thought this was a good opportunity to get that fixed up as well. I can't speak for anyone else's experiences, but all this talk I've run into about needing a press to disassemble the Trunnion joint seems silly. I found that it has a bearing surface and simply pushed out with a small vice. Removed the pin and replaced the old cracked boot with a new style CV boot, it needed modification but ended up working perfectly. Simply trimmed it with a razor blade. (All Balls 19-5008 Black 17mm x 60mm x 81mm Long CV Boot Kit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019QFHRZA/re ... hDbYAX241F Total spent: $18.28

Thanks. I'm going to try this on my 64 Valiant 3 speed stick. I usually convert to a "normal" U-joint, but don't have the funds right now. Don't like to use NOS boots, as they are so old the rubber doesn't last. |

Glad to see there's another good manufacturer P/N for that '65 output seal (National 472466). I used an SKF 14858 when I did the rear seal in my '65 A904. |

Thanks for the trunnion boot tip. Ordered one up, hope it fits my 64 270, looks like it will. I got a "stock" one a while ago and it disintegrated very quickly. |

Unfortunately, a sad update to this thread. 7 months since the Vega seal was installed. It held for a while, but I am getting drips from the tail shaft again. Not as bad as the crusty 55 year old seal dripped, but enough to make me put down a piece of cardboard on the garage floor. So.., back to square one. The original seal is a good bit thicker than the Vega seal. Could that be a factor? |
