Are you guys with dual springs removing the inner spring for cam break in? All the cams I have broken in before used stock or near stock springs and we just broke them in as they were. The springs I am using are dual springs and I think may be from Clifford as the engine had a Clifford cam in it and they are not stock springs. Thanks, Brad |

Personally, I have never changed springs to break in a cam, heavy/dual springs included. Unless they are super stiff, I would not worry about it. These days, I usually run 1/2 a fill of diesel oil for break in since it has more additives in it. Not sure if that is needed or not, but what the heck. Lou |

What kind of oil did you use ? They make special oil with lots of zinc for break in on camshafts. |

I haven't started the engine yet or put oil in it. |

That's where I'd go.https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-1590 If it makes you feel better, pull 'em. It certainly can't hurt anything. But if something happens to the cam during break-in (God forbid), you'll wish you had. |

How aggressive is the cam You are breaking in? That has as much to do with it as anything. I've pulled them, but that was on a somewhat quick cam w/.650" lift using 1.6 rockers, dual Engels @ 1.75 installed ht. |

Cam is not big enough to worry about it (just over 0.500 lift and 250 deg@0.050), unless somehow the springs are super stiff. Lou |

I don't know the seat pressure but I don't think they are super stiff and like Lou said it's not a super aggressive lobe. I am going to run it in like normal with some Valvoline VR1 which is high zinc content and a little cam break in lube I got from my machinist. I am going to get the oil pressure up with the plugs out then run it at 2000 rpms or so for about 20 mins. That has worked for me in the past. |

Can't break in this cam with NO oil pressure. I can't build enough pressure to show anything on the gauge or put out the oil light. The pump on it is a 5 bolt pump that performed well enough on the old engine. I took the pump apart, cleaned it, put a couple of washers behind the spring and reassembled it. I filled the pump with oil before I put on a filter that I also filled with oil. The engine in the car now came from a running Valiant that had good oil pressure. I didn't use that pump because it was damaged when the engine fell over while on the stand. I did not see any cracks in the oil pump pick up tube when I swapped it and the early pan from my old engine. Doesn't mean there isn't one. I think it is getting air from somewhere. I am going to put a new pump on it see if that fixes it before I pull the engine and drop the pan. I will pay close attention to the gasket seal. I can't think of anything else right now. I need to be sleeping. |
