The photo below tells a story about the oil pump gears shown.
Any guesses on what that story is?

H'mmmm. Is 3D printing involved in this story?

Yes, the white gear shown was 3D "printed".

And can we do anything with it?

I donno yet, but it sounds like the start of a new, more cost-effective, faster way of making new oil pump pinions that are actually the way they're supposed to be.

Please excuse my ignorance here: I've heard of 3D printing, But have no idea what that white gear is made out of.. and or how such printing is done in a way that ends up with a steel gear being ready for it's intended use.

The plastic gear was "step #2,
We designed a new SL6 oil pump gear and proto-typed it with a 3D printed gear.(stereolithography)
The material used is soft, much like ABS plastic so it was not intended as a final product, just to prove the new design.
Truth is that the SLA gear was way too soft, It was impossible to really get good gear contact & load info. off t so we took the cnc file and machined another gear, out of aluminum. (thanks Wayno)
All this led to a small lot of pre-production gears... machined at a gear shop.

Now we need someone to write lyrics and sing "Pre-Production Gears" to the tune of Bette Davis Eyes.

It is nice to find / use the original Chrysler produced oil pump gears. Those seem to have less failures.

Truth is, we still see oil pump gear failures, especially in high RPM / performance Slant engines..
I have personally tried many things to fix this issue but it still "bites" me (and others) every so-often.
This new gear design is the latest effort to prevent failures.

So what is different with this new gear design? :?
