So I've never done much work to my differential but I decided to finally fix the leak that's coming through the pinion shaft flange at the front of the diff. I went down to the auto parts store to get the seal but the guy said that there has to be a crush sleeve on it to control bearing pre-load and he said that I should get a new nut as well because they strip off easily, which I can understand because with 240 ft lbs of torque on the nut and 30 years of sitting its not going to be easy to get off, but as for the crush sleeve I simply don't know where it goes. I checked the exploded view diagram of the rear end in the 1967 Chrysler service manual but I don't see anything resembling it and when I read the directions for changing the pinion seal it just wants you to pull off the flange, yank out the seal, clean the surface\ put new seal in, and reassemble. Any help would be appreciated thanks. |

If there is a crush sleeve it's between the bearings on the pinion. Don't worry about it for a seal replacement if the pinion nut hasn't loosened and caused other problems. |

There were pre-load shims right? I told the guy at the auto store that and he acted like he didn’t have a clue of what I was talking about, but that’s what the manual says |

Shims on early stuff, crush sleeves came in later to speed assembly. Guys who build rear ends generally don't work parts counters. |
