I'd guess I've spent about 10 years of my life cleaning parts....
I have a parts washer but I am not wild about sticking super-filthy parts in it 'cuz that just makes a mess of the washer.
So here's my best tip for cleaning a cruddy transmission. Home Depot sells these concrete mixing trays for about $10. The big size will hold an entire 904 and most of a 727. I use about $5 worth of mineral spirits and an old brush and scraper....and it doesn't take too long or make too much of a mess to get a trans pretty clean. The key to this whole thing is the tray....without it, you're sure to lose too much solvent and make too much of a mess.
Then...I either clean the tray or just toss it out.
