How do you coat the inside of headers to help with preventing them from burning out and what is the best coating to use ?

Personally I would talk to my local powdercoater and have them do it.

OP, yes the inside can be coated. Whether it can be done well and properly by an owner vs a vendor, I suspect is doubtful.

With the better ceramic style coatings the benefits are numerous.

The longevity internally however I suspect is variable, depending on tune, HP level, usage, ambient temps, and typical outer air flow among other concerns.

The biggest question, are headers used or new? I also suspect used headers are much more difficult to totally prepare for ideal coating conditions.

I, if given the choice have my headers also internally coated.

I had the Dual Dutra’s on the 83 D150 High Temp powder coated by Indy Powder Coat when I built the engine. I was wanting a coating that would be rust resistant and looked nice for a long time. It took about a year a year for orange rust spots to start. And this is a vehicle that is only driven in the summer and seldom sees rain. The coating I got did not hold up. What ever you chose, find out if they warranty it. When I checked back with them, even though it was a ‘High Temperature’ product, it was not warranted when used on exhaust parts.

Powder coating will not hold up on exhaust manifold/headers. It needs to be a Ceramic type coating.

I have had 2 sets of headers Jet-Hot coated and they have no corrosion or degradation. The do go from shiny to a bit dull after a while. It is expensive, but it really works. I took them a used set of headers in both cases and have been using them on street and strip cars for ~10 yrs.

I used these guys to ceramic coat a set of Clifford shortie headers. They are in Front Royal VA, only about 40 minutes from my house. Cost around $300.

1. I hope no one considered powder coating any header to be driven/used, as mentioned, powder coating will fail quickly.

2. Powder Coater vendors often also offer ceramic coating headers as an additional service they offer.

3. In my experience, header coating vendors always ask on the phone if the headers are used, it feels like on the phone they roll their eyes if I answer yes, and they then charge more if the answer is yes.

4. Internally coating the inside of the header among other things I believe helps insulate the outer coating from higher temps and prolongs the outer coatings life.

5. Any rust appearing later is likely from factors already mentioned, and/or coating break down from high temps in use combined with higher humidity when not running. I don't believe water exposure when in use at high temp plays a part in coating failure from rust.

6. I used Jet Hot and a number of other venbdrs over the decades.

7. A black ceramic? coating is often also offered as higher heat range coating/longer life. I found that not to be proven in my experience. However by it being black, its harder to notice its slow deterioration.

The powder coater I use does all different types of coatings.
