The Daytona Parts Co. website states their carb kits contain “Ethanol Resistant Parts”. I’ve used their kits on two different carbs with no complaints. daytonaparts.com |

Ethanol and carburetor problems are just a myth. Pick whatever brand you please.I've had great luck with the standard GP Sorenson kits available at most parts stores. |

The relevant working group within the Society of Automotive Engineers disagrees with you on that, and so would pretty much any chemist and just about every carburetor expert, but maybe you're right and they're all wrong. Dan's correct, but in your defense in the last few years the few companies that provide carb kits have gone to BUNA components that are alcohol resistant. Just don't let you fuel bowls sit with E10 for a long time, it's not kind to the plating over the potmetal...FYI... |

…and if the plating or surface passivation has been stripped off of the potmetal or aluminum your carburetor's made of, either by years of gradual erosion or by abrasive/abusive cleaning (just about every "remanufactured" carburetor, for example) then the corrosion will be a whole lot faster and more severe. More: the ethanol used in most gasoline is anhydrous: almost no water in it. Turns out hydrous ethanol (with water in it) utterly prevents corrosion of a whackload of different fuel system metals—weird but true; believe it or don't. Research findings published in this SAE paper: 50/50 gasoline/ethanol blends were tested on steel, copper, nickel, zinc (carburetors!), tin, and three types of aluminum. The tests showed that when the water content of the blend was increased from 0 to 1%, corrosion was no longer evident. And, hydrous ethanol takes less energy and money to produce than anyhdrous, and is easier to transport, and would increase ethanol producers’ profits. And, the water in hydrous ethanol acts like the water injection systems of old; there’ve been some tests showing better fuel economy with hydrous E20 (20% hydrous ethanol/80% gasoline) than with 100% gasoline. The Dutch are already marketing gasoline with 15% hydrous ethanol (link also contains refs to more studies finding the same as the SAE: hydrous ethanol = no corrosion). More info here and here and here, all dating back a decade or more. Sooo…better and cheaper…where’s our hE15 pump fuel, dammit?!! |
