Post subject:  First car, '70 dart custom with 225. Want POWER

yeah I'm 18 and I just ran into the deal of a century and picked up a 1970 Dodge Dart Custom with the 225 in good running condition for $400! (My previous 2 cars were A: A 1986 Nissan Maxima my dad has hd for ages and B: A 1987 Pontiac Bonneville... not a bad car until the brakes failed on me...) ANYWAY, I bought it at a tow truck lien sale auction. Whoa that's a mouthful. Anyway, as I said I'm just a kid and I'd like to know how I can beef up my /6 a little. As it is right now it's decent... I can take any toyota corolla (with no glass pack, of course haha) but I'd like to make my car a little more ferocoius without spending more than say, $500. I don't really want to get a turbo charger I just want, y'know, to make it naturally more powerful, I guess...I'm currently learning alot about auto care and such so I would be doing most of the work myself... so YEAH. Anyone out there got some advice or real in-depth info? A website to point me to perhaps? Thanks for the help!

you need a Supre Six and electronic ignition. do a search of both on this site to find all tha info you will need.

Post subject:  Sounds good

If someone could elaborate a little... I know what an electronic ignition is, and I'm thinking that a "super six" is a carb, right? I did the searches but I am a very precise thinking person, I even don't like using abbreviations... Yeah I'm weird....

Strad.....you're thinking in the right direction(s), just not far enough.

The Super six is more than "just" a carb. It's also a two-barrel intake and the exhaust manifold has a little larger outlet than the standard one-barrel exhaust.

In order to do this change-over, you'll need to find a post-'75(?) car, van, or pickup in a salvage yard as a donor vehicle. Get the intake & exhaust manifolds, the carb, air cleaner assembly, and (for auto trans), the kickdown linkage between the trans and carb.

While you're removing these pieces, try not to lose any of the nuts & washers that hold the manifolds to the head. These are one of those little pieces that are rather hard to get anymore, and they don't take up much space in the garage.

Most of us would strongly suggest the liberal use of penetrant lubes on the nuts/bolts at the intake/exhaust assembly, as well as the exhaust pipe flange. The exhaust pipe flange bolts will be especially tough, due to rust and heat/cool cycles. Try to remove the manifolds as an assembly, rather than seperate them. Seperation can be done later on the bench, (very carefully, as the three bolts holding them together have a tendency to break off in the exhaust)

This should get you started, and if there's any other questions, feel free to jump on here and ask.........that's what we're all here for.

Reed's "How to Super Six you Slant Six" article has most of the info you need to do that conversion.
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/supersix/article.htm
If you have not already done so, spend some time in the articles section of this site, there is some good info there including the wiring for the electronic ignition.

Other things you may want to do is a basic tune-up and a valve adjustment. Try to get more distributor advance into the engine.

As always, ask detailed questions and you will get detailed feedback.

Post subject:  Most excellent

Thank you for the link to the article. I didn't know there was an 'article' section, if there's more I'll read them too. I actually know a guy who helped me replace the radiator when I first got it, who's got a '69 road runner with the 383, that'd help me with all this stuff. I had asked him about it and he had said "Check the net because I don't know much about /6's". So yeah, thanks again for the help and I'm sure I'll have more questions later.

I found a super six setup at the wrecking yard today. Carb and air cleaner were missing but the manifolds were there as was the kickdown linkage. Whole setup cost $27.50 and an hour of my time.

Sweet deal. Make sure the exhaust isn't warped before you put it in.

Post subject:  Okay

So, now that I understand well enough about Super Six thanks to that article, can someone tell me more about Electronic Ignitions? Is there a kit I can buy? Did I miss an article that's got all the info I need? Thanks.

Post subject:  Ooops, almost forgot.

this isn't about power... Maybe I should post this message in a different forum but anyway... I get this loud whining sound during acceleration. It seems to me that it's coming from the front left tire. The tire also sounds like it's 'grinding' when I take right turns (so that the weight shifts to the left) a bit on the fast side. Oh yeah, and my power steering fluid leaks me thinks, but I can fix that.

You better take a look at that front left wheel bearing to see if it's OK.
Also be sure to check the bearing races, they may be spinning in the brake hub.
