hey all. . .

i have an A108 with a 225/3 speed in it.
having charging system issues . . .again.
i still have the original style set up.
meaning the single field alternator and the mechanical regulator going thru the dashboard ammeter.
recently replaced the ammeter, the regulator, and the alternator.
currently have a minimal charge situation. meaning that if i use any accessories extremely sparingly, it would probly get me coast to coast(if that was on my agenda)(and it isn't). but anything other than than extremely sparse use of the power will leave me stranded somewhere.

decades ago i tried the solid state regulators and found they are not a direct match for the mechanical regulator.

my question is. . .

what changes do i need to make to make a solid state regulator work in my van. . the mechanical ones r getting pretty pricey.

D~~~!

This belongs in the electrical section, but it sounds like some accessory has a high draw for some reason or the VR isn't sensing right.

If going to the 1970+ system, you will want a late square back style alternator, the VR module, and the pigtail for it, at a minimum.

And wire it like this...

I did this conversion on the 1967 Beater Valiant using parts out of my old '74 and was much better keeping the battery charged,
and putting up with the CD/MP3 player...

If going to a high AMP alternator you may want to switch to voltage regulator or a shunt style Ammeter.

SSD used to have some nice posts on better conversions and protection for the wiring...

There are solid state replacements out there now. I bought one last spring when I upgraded to electronic ignition and have had no problems so far (but my mechanical one was working fine when I replaced it). I think I bought mine from FBO (website is 4secondsflat I think) but I can't remember for sure. You can also find them on Ebay.

You also don't say what accessories you are running, a modern stereo might be too much for a low output early alternator.

sorry about not noticing the electrical section. . can i move this thread over there?

the only non original wiring in my van is the rarely used plug for a 4 wire trailer harness and a set of spot lites mounted on the front bumper. evrything else is stock from the factory.
the dash AMP meter is still pretty damned good at letting me know when i am in a discharge state. currently, it just stays centered.
not moving toward discharge, but also not moving toward charge.
a VOM across the battery confirmed what i suspected.

The solid state replacements are under $30 shipped so you may wanna try one of those before upgrading the whole charging system. My 64 can run all the accessories and lights and not wear down the battery.

I have one like this on my 64 Valiant. Can only vouch for it as far as that, and it works pretty well so far.
