Post subject:  PS low pressure line diameter

The Picnicuda, formerly V8 w PS is now a Formula S/6! I have the V8 ps box and pump w small pulley, a Saginaw /6 pump w brackets & a bent pulley, and a /6 Federal pump w pulley and bracket. Both /6 pumps have smaller diameter low pressure line fittings than the V8 pump and steering box. My questions are like so:
-Can/should I swap /6 bracket andpulley to the FederalV8 pump?
-Swap good /6 pulley to the saginaw pump and use an adapter union to match the diameter of the low pressure at the steering box?

Hmmm...

You can't switch the pulleys between a Federal and Saginaw pump, as I recall. For one thing, the Saginaw uses a keyed shaft and the Federal doesn't.

As for the diameter of the hose....3/8" ID hose seems to fit both ends. The steering box fitting is a little smaller than the Saginaw tube, but mates well with 3/8" hose. I seem to recall they used 11/32" hose...so it's not 'correct' to use 3/8" but it works well.

I recently switched to a Saginaw from the Federal and was a little surprised to find the steering effort has gone up. The power steering is definitely working but the steering has more of a 'firm feel' than before. I personally find all the rage over 'firm feel' power steering to be misguided and simply undesirable. It's the same feeling I get when I see people lauding Michael Jackson or sweet tea.

Change the fitting on the steering box to match the pump.

Joshua, I swapped the fitting. Before I had a chance to research or shop around, someone dumped a bunch of scrap metal in the home depot parking lot. On top was a greasy old steering box with a familiar looking fitting! Took it back to the shop and it matched right up. Cleaned and installed tonight. Merry Scrapmas to me!

Nobody dumps scrap metal at home depot around here.....

Especially a scrap pile with old usable moparts.

:D
