Hi all,

I have a Cater Carburetor on my engine and after viewing several grainy YouTube videos of the same time I believe it is damaged. As you can see in the photos there is a actuating arm of some sort which should be connected to a spring leading into the engine. As I understand it, as the engine heats up it draws or pushes the spring which activates the arm and adjusts some sort of vacuum...thing. Real technical description, I know. Can anyone confirm this?

Some info on the carb that I can see. I have no experience dealing with these.

1. The number "G-2634"
2. The number "2681"
3. If I look down the throat there are two openings under the flapper
4. The engine was built in 1978 and supposedly came out of a 73-74 Dart (Yes that was written correctly)

My plan it to attempt to take the pieces off and bend them back into shape. Any advice on this is appreciated, but my guess is heating the bend points with a propane torch would be my best bet.

On the exhaust manifold is a choke thermostat which, along with the choke vacuum pull-off, is responsible for the positioning of the choke plate. Do not heat the pull-off, you will destroy the diaphragm. Don't heat any of it. Just straighten the bent stuff.

The numbers you found are casting numbers. The carburetor number is stamped on a tag affixed to the carburetor. It is likely missing.

As you are starting your slant 6 endeavors nearly from scratch you really need good technical information in the form of a Factory Service Manual. If you want said manual to cover the carburetor and intake system shown you'll need one that covers a 1978 Dodge or Plymouth as you have the 2 bbl Super Six and not the 1 bbl that is far more common.

The tag appears to be in the first photo attached to the top under a screw. (Right side of photo) By the looks of the choke horn, it also appears to be a correct slant six BBD, not a transplanted v8 or AMC carb.

Don't let that carb go! Don't turn it in for a core charge, and make sure that you get that one back if you take it somewhere to be rebuilt. Many shops don't seem to understand the differences. Shoot, most shops don't really know how to deal with a carburetor anymore.

Hopefully you can see how the choke lever is supposed to be in a "u" shape.
In your picture, you can see a line where the first bend used to be.

Also, your choke pull-off bracket is slightly out of plane.

Thanks for all the information guys. I will look around for a factory service manual. In the meantime, I had planned to take the bent parts off before heating them. I can see some minor stress fracture's and am concerned about snapping the parts. I will try to bend it by hand before wailing/heating everything. Sounds like I've got a good carb, will definitely hold onto it.

You should be able to easily straighten that choke arm by clamping it in a vise, or just tapping it flat with a hammer. It isn't a high stress piece and really, no need to apply heat. The choke pull-off can either be replaced entirely or just bend it straight by hand if it is still in working order.

Thanks for all the tips guys,

I have removed it and beat it back into a U shape as per Badvert65's advice. I also flattened out the plane of the choke pull off bracket as per Sixinthehead's advice. I may still need to make some minor adjustments, but it looks and moves better now. I'll try and post some after pictures when I get the chance.
