Post subject:  ignition control module problems

Some years back i retrofitted my 87 half ton originally equipped with the POS lean
burn with the Chrysler electronic ignition complete with ballast resister and ICM from a mid
70's slant six duster.

The ICM was failing routinely and continually....when trying to start it, often in traffic...
when i was stopped at a red light stalling out when releasing the clutch, etc.
Over the years i was continually replacing the ICM's and attributed it to poor quality foreign parts.

Sooooo..... this past summer i finally got off my duff and installed the GM HEI per Dan's
instructions and it ran terrific. The change was dramatic but unfortunately it soon
began to burn out the HEI modules as well. This time it will often shut down when
running....in traffic....all the time with out warning every bit as bad before the conversion.

I believe i must have some sort of voltage surge but i am not sure. Has anyone experienced
anything like this? I sure would like to make this vehicle reliable. All thoughts and ideas would
be sincerely appreciated.

1) install a genuine AC Delco 4 pin HEI module
here is one available from RockAuto
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... SVLYCdg%3D

or maybe get one from a Chevy at a Pull a Part. I had two Mallory HEI modules fail each in less than 18 months is use

2) be sure that you have a heat sink and that you are using a heat transfer paste between the back side of the HEI and the heat sink
one heat sink example is at the link below
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado- ... gLXDfD_BwE

the heat sink paste should be in the box with the new moudle

3) although others have not I run mine through a dedicated relay to get solid voltage to the module. The HEI module ground is also important.

Run the power wire to the relay directly to the battery ( fuse it) and you will solid voltage and minimize power surge concerns.

You'll want to check your charging system to make sure the alternator's output is steady and smooth, not flickery and spiky.

DadTruck covered most of it. Go through all the battery charging, alternator and regulator wiring and connectors. This includes the ammeter connections, the bulkhead connector and all the junk at the starter relay. Make sure the engine block and chassis are well bonded (connected electrically) using the same size cable as the negative battery cable.

I have had similar problems... on my 318's with HEI Retrofit.

I was using Standard brand HEI Modules.. I guess I need to buy some relays, AC Delco modules and Wire it correctly.

The decline in quality of the HEI modules makes me think going to Ford's EDIS is a preferred way to go. Parts are newer, at least.

That's why I searched for a genuine HEI module from GM. It was NOS for a Firebird IIRC, but I am pretty sure al lthe GM modules are identical. I run mine with a dedicated relay too so I can install a hidden "no start" switch.

Is it really buring up modules or are you losing power to it? It seems odd to me that it is burning up modules even after changing style of ignition.

Where is power being fed from?
